    Superfeet?

Giggy, In my opinion, the most significant aspect of Superfeet is the hard plastic, molded arch. Cushioning and fit of the shoe are a distant second in my opinion. If you have never worn an insole with a rigid arch support, they can take some getting used to. In fact, they can be downright...

    BD Contact Strap 10 Pointers

una_dogger, I would take those off your hands (if you haven't already had any takers) for my girlfriend, especially if they would fit a women's size 6. I have PayPal and can pay you that way if it works for you. John

    Allen to McDonnel to Skylight?

Oops! Forgot about the camping restrictions above certain altitude. I was working from Topozone at work and didn't do conversion from meters. I looked at my notes. 12 hours, 30 min from Allen trailhead to Allen to Redfield via Redfield slide and back to Upper Works, with time spent relaxing...

    Allen to McDonnel to Skylight?

Albee, I have bushwhacked from Allen to Redfield in the summer. The route we took was not too bad. I probably have some notes from my trip at home. If you are interested, email me and I will give you some more detailed information. There were four of us (all pretty strong hikers), and I...

    My First VFTT Decal Sighting

Doc, That was my green pickup. Unfortunately, someone hit my cap in the parking lot and shattered the back glass door on the cap (and they didn't leave a note with their information). It was cheaper for me to buy a whole new cap on eBay than to replace the back window so I'll have to get to...

Black Bear Kills a 6 Year Old and Injures two Others!

John, You make a very good point and I couldn't agree more. I think one could make the same argument for mountain lions as well, especially when one considers that their habitat is also shrinking, as the outskirts of suburbia are pushed further and further into their natural habitat. I would...

    More ?s about the Tetons

If you're looking for some good reading to get you excited about your trip (or just good reading for any reason), I highly recommend Teewintot by Jack Turner (an Exum guide). I can't say enough good things about this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is insightful and inspiring and makes me...

    Gear recommendations?

Percious, I have the Black Diamond Mercury mitts and found that if I treat the leather with a rub in DWR treatment, I get a significantly more weatherproof glove. I too was disappointed the first time I used the Mercury mitts, but am quite happy with them after this "fix." John

    freezing Camelbacks

My response below is copied from an ealier thread on this site on the same topic. Here is the link to the thread. Eric Savage summed up most of what I had to say, but I'll add a few things. I've also had very good success with a hydration bladder in the winter, and much prefer it. Like Glenn...

the most beautiful thing you've ever seen on the trail?

Aerial Display by Canadian Geese We were on the Indian Head Cliffs overlooking the Ausable Lakes and the Great Range during peak foliage in October just before sunset (as if that wasn't beautiful enough), when a flock of about 20-25 geese flew over the range between Armstrong and Gothics, and...

Winter Cooking, KP Duty Styles & Techniques

After my tent, sleeping bag, etc. are set up I fill my empty stuff sack up with snow and put it right next to the tent door. That's my water supply right there. Once I'm in that tent and start cooking, I'm not coming back out until the morning, although I suppose there could be instances where...

softshell pants: mammut or wild things? or something else?

I fifth (or was it sixth) the Schoeller Dryskin Extreme Pants. You can't go wrong with Cloudveil, Mammut, or Marmot. There are quite a few different Schoeller fabrics. For winter use in the Northeast, I think you're best bet is Schoeller Drysking Extreme, preferably with the 3XDRY treatment...

    Packcover with a hood?

Neil, I actually made my own "snow cape" for the exact purpose you described. The two attached photos are the best I have to show the details. The hood is not part of the cape, but it does a damn good job of keeping snow from getting between me and my pack, and is not a hindrance when moving...

    in praise of rubber boots...

I think they are made by Tingley. They're the kind you can buy at Agway for around $20-25. Thin, stretchy rubber boots.
