A Taste of Winter on the Presidential Range- 10/18/2015

hiker0200, Looks like you had a great post breakfast workout! I really enjoyed the video recap. Thanks for your effort putting it together. I haven't been to the Presidents (or hiking at all) in quite sometime, however, videos such as yours inspire me to get back out there.

    Goretex vs Softshell bibs?

Full bibs (like the Alpha SV) can get too warm at times for me. I prefer the Theta Lt pants with suspenders also made by Arcteryx. They vent better, feel more comfortable compared to bibs, and are less weight to carry in your pack during ascent.

What size backpack for 8 Days of Food and Equipment?

8 day hike with no resupply I spent 8 days in Ansel Adams Wilderness (August time frame). I needed to carry two bear cannisters. Meals were repackaged (to save space due to air) mountain house dinners, gorp, powerbars, dry cereal, oatmeal, powdered milk, etc... 4 days rations fit in each...

James Kim and a hell of a fight

long wait....before hiking out. The question that I keep asking myself is....Wouldn't it have made sense to scout the nearby areas in the first few days? Something like: Day 1. Wait for help in car with family. Day 2. Hike north a mile or so, then return to car. Rest/warm up, then go...

James Kim and a hell of a fight

It brought tears to my eyes when I found out about the stocked cabin nearby had James traveled in a different direction. He was a hero and put up a hell of a fight with the resources given. My prayers go out to his family. I have learned from this tragety and I'm sure many others have as...

    Weight of your first-aid kit?

Winter Kit I used to carry a lot. Now just some chap stick, moleskin (thick & thin) sheets, a few hand warmers, benadryl, a few band aids and pain control (tylenol and/or ibuprofin). I'd say about about 1 pound. Enough to fit in a sandwich baggie.

Woman Dies from fall on Half Dome

Thanks Darl, Great Photo!! This shot makes me uncomfortable sitting in front of my computer. Looks like quite a tumble if you lose your balance.

Woman Dies from fall on Half Dome

How much does he weigh? I was thinking he was light enough to carry on your back (in some sort of harness). I understand where your coming from, but some people may get freaked out seeing anything attached to the cables and moving toward them. If its not a busy time attach away. However...

Woman Dies from fall on Half Dome

I agree. Although I remember one narrow section on the ridge (just beyond the summit ridge towards half dome) that was kinda narrow. It will provide some excitement if you fear heights. I think I sorta crawled along for 20ft or so.....defintely provided some "pucker factor."

Woman Dies from fall on Half Dome

From what I recall, you can take him up. I don't think you can attach runners to the cables because (if I understand your thinking) it would force the people coming down to let go of the cables for a brief moment as they passed you. For most it would be ok but some hold on to them for dear...

Woman Dies from fall on Half Dome

Your welcome....Tuco Half Dome is very busy in July/August. Many people are ascending/decending the cables at the same time. In addition to the height I was afraid someone might lose their grip, or footing, and come tumbling down on me. I did witness a step tread (plank) give way under one...

Woman Dies from fall on Half Dome

Pretty sad story.... I really fear heights. During a Yosemite trip five or six years ago I chose not to climb Half Dome via the mentioned cables....I was embarrassed as I waited at the base for my friends to summit (good guys--they never teased me). From time to time since then I've...

    MSR WhisperLite Tips?

WL Tips... Place it on an unoccupied shelf in your basement and leave it there.....or sell it on ebay...then look for a used or older model XGK. I wouldn't want to depend on a WL for emergnency situations....especially melting snow for survival....

    Msr's? - moved from Q&A

thumbs up I have two sets (ascents & evo ascents). The "televators" alone are worth their weight in gold....I sometimes forget to flip them up. After climbing for a while I remember to do this (flip them up), and it feels like heaven (for my lower back and calves) when I do...... The...
