    Glacier National Park Hiking ideas???

I did a 10 day trek through GNP 5 yrs ago. I've since done similar length trips through Rocky Mtn N.P., the Wind River Range, and Baxter. Glacier remains the single most amazing place I've had the privilege (sp?) to visit. It's an amazing, mystical place. I cried when I reached Fifty...

    Lunch ideas for winter hikes

Why not take advantage of the cold temps? If consistently below freezing I've been known to carry in ChocoTacos, Snickers ice cream bars, etc. I too have problems with appetite while in the backcountry, but can somehow always manage to muster up the willpower to chew on some convenient ice...

    Favorite handsaw.

My fiancee insists on packing her SvenSaw anywhere we go.....be it with the hope of an allowed campfire, or the guise of trail maintenance. ;) When forced to use it myself I've found it more effective than hiking companions alternatives, comparitively speaking.

    Western Mountaineering Puma -15

I don't have the Puma, but my Apache Super DL has served me very well over the past 3 yrs. I've yet to hear a negative on either WM or Feathered Friends products. The Apache I have is rated to 15, and I've slept in it down to 10 (with a hat and fleece) and was toasty. They are conservative in...

    map and compass reading course

My gf and I took such a class a few years back.....for free. It was held at a local outfitter and was offered a few times a year. I'd say around 15-20 people showed up and it was very rudimentary.....it was more of an introduction to maps and compasses than an orienteering course. I don't...

    Anyone use igloos or....

For me, I'd have absolutely zero qualms leaving either an igloo or a quinzee standing upon departure......I mean, it's snow. Also, I think I'd be fairly jazzed if I stumbled across a working shelter while on the trail, especially one of this type, that wouldn't leave a trace once it warmed up...

    Anyone use igloos or....

I read all about quinzee building last Winter and gave it a try in my backyard. We had gotten about 10" or so of good "snowball" snow, on top of 4-5" of older stuff w/a thin crust. I went out in the backyard and cleared a circle maybe 15-18' in diameter, and then started filling it in from...

    Canoe trip suggestions needed

Depending on what you're looking for there are two trips I'd recommend in ME - both are near Baxter and will require some driving. The Allagash as someone else mentioned - this 92 mile trip can be done in 5-8 days and crosses a few stretches of Class II rapids. I have not done this (yet)...

Hospital Down Time - Need Some Reading Material Suggestions

You sound like you'd benefit from a laugh or two.....so check out Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods". You'll laugh out loud regularly. An easy read, but I found it very enjoyable. It's about two out of shape 40 somethings deciding they're going to thru hike the AT. Much hilarity ensues.

    Heading to Wyoming and Idaho

Well, I HAVE to give you major kudos for your pics. Most of what I took in the Winds ended up looking very washed out. We were in diff't parts than your pics (went up Haley Pass and down Washakie Pass) but I found it very difficult to get any sort of interesting contrasts.....the sky was very...

SK - thx a LOT for that tip. :)

    Heading to Wyoming and Idaho

My advice would be to make the Tetons a day trip and save your backpack for the Wind River range. I did a multi day trip thru the Winds a couple summers ago and was really wowed. Once we were down we headed up to the Tetons.....but the tourists are really very pervasive. After seing nary a...

    Car break ins/vandalisms near BSP??

I also think the Wrangler is a better match for the dirt roads we're sure to enounter en route. The Subaru is 450hp and while it's reliable, and fun to drive, it would be near impossible to replace if taken. As drool worthy as a 550 mile trip in it would be, it's not worth the risk of...

    Car break ins/vandalisms near BSP??

West Branch of the Penobscot for 5-7 days. I've decided to take the Jeep (which I don't worry about, at all), instead of the Subaru, which is sort of a project car. Thx everyone for the feedback, but I came to the conclusion that driving something I'd worry about the entire time is counter...

    Car break ins/vandalisms near BSP??

Thx greatly for the speedy reply el-bagr. Appreciated. Do you think that the remoteness of the put-in spot makes it a safer parking area? Aside from the incidents over the Winter (which I find just astounding, truly) have you heard of any other incidents? If any other locals wanna sound off...

    Car break ins/vandalisms near BSP??

Hello kind climbers. :) Recently posted about a canoeing camping trip on the Penobscot, and how my car was broken into in the Whites a few years ago. (two separate threads). Was wondering if BSP was far enough out of the way to not have to worry about break ins or vandalism. It's a 10hr...

    West Branch Penobscot canoe trip.....

No no no no.....Fitz, I have ZERO interest in an outfitter coming along with. I'm just in need of a canoe and paddles, and was wondering if I should rent from anyone in particular. Also, I didn't know if finding someone to ferry you to and from (start and end) would prove problematic, or if...

    West Branch Penobscot canoe trip.....

Gris - that would prove infinitely helpful! I'll PM you later this week or early next to see what she had to say, if that'd be o.k. Bob - what a coincidence! That's what I read this a.m. that spurred my interest. Have done some canoe/camp trips in my youth with Outward Bound, but nothing...

    Crazy weather stories

While on a backpacking trip in Glacier Nat'l Park we got hit by a thunderstorm at night that penned us in on 3 sides. You could see and hear the lightning rolling in, and by the time it arrived everyone's hair was standing on end (we were all in our tents, on pads) and you could feel the...
