Thanks. Apparently railroads have different rules. That was good wood there for a long time.

    Gear website name I can't recall ?

About 10 years ago I was finding good deals on a site with an odd name that I can't remember now. It was set up in categories that would link to other sites deals. With Amazon now, this old site may be out of business. Any idea what it was called ? Thanks.

    bring extra microspiikes/crampons

it's ice, ice baby and some are not prepared. it's amazing how far a young couple got up the trail before crashing hard on the ice. we split our microspikes with them so we all had 1 on the way out.

25 years of temporary, migrating mild to severe pain in feet, ankles, knees is Gout

About every 6 months for the past 25 years, I've experienced mild to severe pain in my feet, ankles or knees. Rarely the same one. It was some sort of inflamatory process that would last a week or so and would generally resolve itself and be gone by the time I saw a Doctor. Good prescription...

Backpacking to fish light kayak/inflatable ?

Anybody have any good experience/luck with a backpacking to fish light kayak/inflatable that you can recommend ? I've seen the $5000.00 ones. I'm looking to start cheap and under 25lbs, to see if this is a habit I pursue. Thanks.

    LifeStraw water filters

Just ordered a couple of these (in the bottle style). When I searched "LifeStraw" here, the last post of a 10 year old thread asked about them. Any input ? Seem pretty safe for relatively clean water, like out of a trail side river. http://lifestraw.com/...

Osprey with babies in Dummer/Milan, NH

I'll try to edit this and attach a decent video, but at the intersection of 110a and 16 in Dummer, NH there's a place to pull off and easily observe this Osprey family, if you are in the area and interested. (PS: If anyone thinks this is an invasion or should not be disclosed: it's right next...

What makes a quality knife ? Metallurgy, Advertising, the Sharpener ?

Knives are weird. You can spend $3 or $300 on one that looks the same as the other. Like most boys and outdoors people I love a good looking knife, but I'm about 30 years past the "Ego" part of the purchase. We bought a relatively expensive Cutco kitchen set 12 years ago from my niece and...

ever see wild pigs in NH ?

(Mods can delete this if it's out of line.) I'm tapping into the vast NH General Backcountry knowledge and experience here. (see, there's the tie-in ;)) I'm wondering if anyone has seen feral pigs/boar in NH ? I know the Corbin's Park/Blue Mountain Forest Association story. Just wondering if...

Forgot how bad Polartec Fleece is

We discussed this quite a while ago. I should just throw it out. LL Bean Polartec Fleece. Traps and holds moisture like a sponge in a zip lock. Avoid.

"Elevation training" Mask ? Anyone seen these ?

Looks mildly interesting for those of us with limited time to train at low elevations. Might also be a decent mask under goggles in winter. "Introducing Training Mask, a new, patented (PAT.8.590.533 B2) "Resistance Training Device" product that helps condition the lungs by creating pulmonary...
