REALLY bad news - Governor's list of NY park closures

" All state parks are open " ? This press release dated 5/28 seems odd . We drove by Devil's Tombstone on Friday and it was closed . We stayed at Colgate Lake where we talked at length with a DEC Ranger and he made no mention of any change in the parks closures . Dave

So sorry to hear this , Kevin . Prayers to the family . We had planned to hike Blackhead also , but the weather kept us away . Dave

A boring trip up a benign mountain

I was going to say that the top of that field would be a great spot to sit and take in the view , but then I thought about the almost certain ticks in the tall grass ... so I didn't type that . But I'll bet a lot of people have done just that . Good luck & get well ! Dave

A boring trip up a benign mountain

Nice TR , thanks for sharing this . Rand's View I think ? Don't think of it as boring , think of it as one hike closer to getting back the stamina that you once had...and will again . Just wondering , any idea where you got the tick that caused this ? Dave

Parking at Mt Wash. State Park- Massachusetts

We were up there this past Sunday and the Jersey Barrier was dragged down into the Northwest Cabin parking area , so they may be getting ready to block the road . We were in a hurry & I wasn't paying much attention to the road south of the parking lot , but it " appeared " to still be open...

Parking at Mt Wash. State Park- Massachusetts

I would think so. There's tent sites about a mile in and the cabin just below the summit of Alander that's open to the public , so I guess they'd expect you to park somewhere . For what it's worth , I've seen hunters complete with campers stay overnight in that lot before . Try calling ? Dave

    NW CT Off-season Camping???

If you park at the AMC lot head in through the gate , bear left at the cabin & follow the old charcoal road to the AT...about 15 minutes . Hang a left [north] on the AT and it's maybe another 15 minutes and you'll be at the campsite . It's all downhill . It's a lot quicker getting there than it...

    NW CT Off-season Camping???

Yeah , in the winter when the barricade is up you have to come in from the Mass. end . The plow uses the AMC lot to turn around in so it's "usually" well cleared . And more often than not , so is the little parking spot for the Frissell trailhead . There's houses almost to the state line so...

    NW CT Off-season Camping???

Park at the AMC Northwest cabin on Mt. Washington Rd at the Mass/Ct border , which is just yards away from the Mt. Frissell trailhead . You'll be only about 15 minutes from the AT and you could go north to sages Ravine campsite or go south to Brassie Brook shelter . There's quite a few other...

    New Hunter lean-to

A couple of months ago we came down off Hunter that way not knowing the old shelter burned down . I was wondering how we could have gone right by without seeing it....now I know . Going to have to check the new one out . Dave

Bushwhacking from AT to South Taconic Trail

Not sure if I can help much with these 3 trailheads . The 2 near Rudd Pond I believe are just short walks in the park . Although , looking at the map that Davehiker mentioned , the lower one seems to connect to a bunch of trails that do get up close to Bird Peak . My GF walked in there but...

Bushwhacking from AT to South Taconic Trail

Chip , Pat and I had to whack down through there a couple of years ago when you and Early Bird left us " old timers " in the dust . However , we had a plan to deal with any irate landowners we might meet along the way . I wouldn't say anything and she would only speak German if we met anyone. We...

    2nd easiest 4000 footer

I'd have to say Hale by the Firewarden's trail . It's never steep or rocky, and with the foliage peaking , now would be a great time to do it . Yes, I know it's not an " official " trail, but IMHO it should be . Dave

    moderate hikes in white mountains?

Chip's idea is a good one , but Weatherman makes it better by using the Osseo Trail rather than the boring Liberty Springs Tr. You could still drop down to the tentsite for an overnight , it's not far . Or...you could hike in on the Wilderness Tr. and camp off the Bondcliff Tr. . Then head...

Thanks Chip ! I waited a year from #47 for Pat to catch up , but she's still at #29 . I figured I better get going while I'm still able ! Almost stopped in at the Tarry Ho but chose to spread our $ in N. Conway instead . Ran into Sabrina , MJ , Rocket 21 & Lawnsale on Haystack Rd , and yeah ...

    Flags on the 48 - 2009 - 09/12/2009

Carrigain's going to be a busy place . I plan on also finishing on the 12th . Of course we're hoping for clear weather but will try to make it no matter what . See you all there....!

    Visitor count on Mt Washington?

Busy place indeed ! Mt. Washington's summit is the only place I've seen my dog uncomfortable . She's never been afraid of anything , but she wasn't too happy there . So....next hike up will be dogless :( Dave

    Body parts in peak names?

Not part of any peak , but there's Giant's Thumb on the AT in Salisbury Ct. All by itself in the woods, it looks like something from Stonehenge or Easter Island .

    Why they bite there

I agree with Wardsgirl , as the little buggers always seem to find a way to get under my hat . Why there is anyone's guess .... Dave
