Easily accessible, must-see destination in the Adirondacks

Doesn't have to be a 4K foot peak. Two interesting peaks that give you a lot of views for a small amount of work are Hurricane and Pitchoff. Bigger is not always better. Hurricane provides interesting views of most of the high peaks. Pitchoff is a relatively short climb, then a walk along a...

    Fastest known time.

Dang!!!! I wanted to work on that, but from time to time I go down by bicycle, so I'm out of luck.

Caling ADK hikers. Need advice please!

I stay there often. It's a relatively quiet campground, nice. Showers work, etc. Close to many trailheads.

    new info on black bears

Ah, but this was somewhat new. The new study was by Herrero himself. He was interviewed on CBC radio last night on "As it Happins" http://www.cbc.ca/asithappens/ In the second segment, starting at about 16:25 If you go there after tonight, this will have been moved to 'previous episodes'

    46er trail maintenance schedule correction

There was a mis-communication after the mistake. Mark is INCORRECT. The final trailwork is Saturday, the day of the fall meeting. The text mailed out and on the web page is correct. The signup sheet mailed out had an error, and the signup sheet on the web page will soon be corrected.

Pulley system to cross Indian Pass Brook!?

Fast enough moving and it takes even less. In Herbert Brook, after/(or during) a thunderstorm, very fast moving water.... a bit more than halfway up to my knees... knocked me down and swept me about 100 feet downstream. I was mostly out of the water.. wasn't deep.. but I just could not stop...

    misspelled summit sign! - MacNaughton

To further confuse the issue, the person who put it up is not Canadian. He lives in Québec.... Does that mean he's more or less clueless? Or more clueless..... or less clueless?

    Fill in your divots!

But that doesn't make sense. I pee in the middle of the trail to mark my territory. What good is a mark if I have to cover it up. It's an innate, thing you know.... not something learned.

    misspelled summit sign! - MacNaughton

While I may have installed that sign, I was not the one who provided its spelling. I would would have done it even worse. It doesn't make a difference either, because it's not even one of the 46.

    ADK Grid?

Then there are those who don't do a 'round' but do a single peak hundreds of times. I remember Ketch encouraging this when talking about 'his' peak, Algonquin. He said that you really must hike it every week of the year to appreciate the changes that occur throughout the year.

    ADK Grid?

To me, 'grid' has the implication of a challenge to be done, rather than just doing something.

    ADK Grid?

Yeah.... an example of where the New England culture is influencing ADK culture. I remember Grace showing me the form Fred Hunt had sent her. It was never called a grid in the ADKs until the past few years. Monthly or 12x46, but never a grid. And Fred did that a long time ago.

In Frostbite Conditions, Keep Yourself Covered -- Word to the Wise

Amusing, because in my earlier days of winter cycling (32 years now), I'd wear XC-ski and hiking clothes, because there was no such thing as winter cycling clothes. These days, I frequently hike in winter hiking clothes. When hiking out at night, the reflectorized strips all over me make me...

campsite on MacIntyre Range Trail ?

The best way to find it is to pass it and go back. It'll take 45-60 seconds. Hit the brook then turn around. You are now heading back. While standing there, look to your right and look up. There is a flat area up there, and that is where the campsite is. Start walking back looking for a...

When I saw the subject of this thread, I couldn't help thinking that it was someone from Boston asking about the Belmont Racetrack.

    Zipper Repair

I know that here, at MEC they sell just the sliding thingy for (I think) $0.50. You don't even need a kit. But the stealing one from a co-worker. I'm sure you've got some people you work with who NEVER zip their sweater/coat closed. They'd never miss it. It is important that the thingy is...

    Zipper Repair

This is SO easy. Take a good coat with a zipper on it. With the two sides NOT connected, slide the thingamajig up to the top. Then look at why it didn't come off. There is either a melted nub which you can cut off, some threadding which can be cut, or a little metal thingy which can be...

Is There A Cure for Pig Pen Smelling Boots?

Sun is a great deodorizer. Leave them out in the hot sun for a week or so. Just make sure to 'oil' the leather parts to prevent them from drying up.

    Latest Forest Ranger Report

Well, if they are a member of this forum, they'd get blasted for not having that, not doing this, not knowing that, etc. I know that if I was the object of a S&R, I'd rather die than face what I'd get here after being rescued.
