Deerfly Patches; not just for Humans

Our shepherd has been viciously attacked this year by the not-so-dear flys. They weren't so bad yesterday but I think we're on the right track.

The official 2010 Spring wildflowers thread...

Haven't seen anything not already posted but... when I found this passage on a site... "At the outlet, the stream drops twenty feet over an outcrop of Seboomook Slate, forming Little Allagash Falls. Below the falls, the stream continues flowing over three ledges before leveling out. During the...

    Colt/Coit Mtn, Newport NH

hiked there a few times There are a lot of trails on these hills and the trail map is available locally. There are a lot of trails not on the map. The steepest trails are on the south face of Coit, but the Coit trail on the north side has some interesting features. The trail to the east of...

The official 2010 Spring wildflowers thread...

Nothing yet... but I found this link http://www.state.me.us/doc/parks/Pubs/AWWBroc/AWW6.html#Stream Below the falls, the stream continues flowing over three ledges before leveling out. During the low water of summer, exposed gravel bars are crowded with large purple-fringed orchis, swamp...

Has anybody here skied with the usgi Ramer cable bindings?

We did our training at the Black Rapids site. There wasn't any double diamonds but the instructors even in the MM boots could cut some nice tight turns over varied terrain and snow conditions.

Has anybody here skied with the usgi Ramer cable bindings?

Why do you (or don't you) hile solo?

I have spent the last 30+ years solo hiking. I love to hike alone. I know the hazards, I respect the hazards, but it's worth the risk to go alone, and a lot easier to hike alone than find someone who matches your abilities. I have the first page of an article from a July '69 Field & Stream...

    Do You Ever Hike Drunk?

I will drink if it's an overnight. Which is not to say that there wasn't a bottle of wine for the group lunch at the summit or view point.

    Rescuers fear "Yuppie 911"

Tim I agree that charging for S&R doesn't bring in much but on the other hand I also don't see where it would have much of an impact on where a person hikes. NH has some of the best hiking on the east coast. So what does a person say from eastern Mass have for an alternative? Drive 5 more hour...

    Rescuers fear "Yuppie 911"

NH has a problem raising money, even before our current economic down turn. Without a Board base tax, (not that I'm advocating one) they have to use creative method to pay for things. I don't know anything about the reg of Boats and ORVs but doesn't an out-a-stat'a need a reg if they use them...

    Rescuers fear "Yuppie 911"

The thing is it's not just yuppies that can't do these. I was continually amazed while in the Army how many people could not learn to read a map, nav with a map/compass no matter how many classes they had. I met a Thru hiker on the approach to Smarts Mtn, I pulled out the map a told him where...

    Trends in Outdoor Recreation

Amen TCD Here's some goals for you. I took my mother on the Presidential traverse at age 75, staying in a tent in the Great Gulf an then the two northern huts. At 80 she climbed Washington with a stay at LOTC and a ride down the cog. Now at 85 she's still walking the hills around Newport, NH

    Rescuers fear "Yuppie 911"

We've always had yahoos in the mountains, one of the reasons I don't hike Washington or Franconia loop in the summer, waaay too many of them. Putting a Yuppie 911 in these peoples hands is asking to bankrupt SAR groups. I do a lot of solo hiking and have thought about getting one but haven't...

    Early November Trip Planning

What is the 'Worth'? Every trail and hill has worth, and I know I'm not one of the 'best' minds. But don't get buried in doing just what is worth doing. Lighten up. I walked a Cedar Swamp a mile from my house today, and it was WELL worth doing.
