Saturday I thought I was going to bushwhack up Colt Mtn in Newport NH:
http://mapper.acme.com/?ll=43.38833,-72.16902&z=15&t=T

but I made it to the summit using soggy woods roads and some dry mtn bike trails I found. This not being the WMNF, there was even a sign on the summit that said Coit Mtn [sic?].

My research at home led me to conclude that Coit is correct, it was named for a black resident of Newport

And I also found a map that would have made my hike easier if less adventurous:

hiked there a few times

There are a lot of trails on these hills and the trail map is available locally. There are a lot of trails not on the map.

The steepest trails are on the south face of Coit, but the Coit trail on the north side has some interesting features.

The trail to the east of the pinnacle, Grenvilles, is a great walk.

In the late summer there are orchids in the foundation on the east side of the road.

It's a great place to just wander between trails also.

What's the Coit summit like -- any neat/nifty granite ledges?
The summit is wooded but there is a limited view from the Pinnacle

The Coit Mtn Trail has a couple small ledges which may have views if it isn't drizzling, but wanders a lot and is better for mtn bikes than hiking

If anybody visits the cave shown on the map, please let us know if it really requires hard hat and headlamp
