Poll: Hiking or Climbing Solo - Do you do it? Ever?

OK I'll bite...very occasional poster but constant lurker. I don't hike nearly as much as I'd like due to where I live, but I make it up to the mountains a few times a year. I've been finding more and more that many of my best days out are hiking (and b/c skiing) solo, regardless of the season.

    Tucks Headwall Avalanche

Best article I've seen This is the most comprehensive I've seen so far about the incident. With only a little reading between the lines you can get a pretty clear idea of exactly what happened. http://www.mvtimes.com/2013/12/31/oak-bluffs-men-survive-tuckerman-ravine-fall-18460/

    Ski conditions on Moosilauke lately?

Here's a report Hi-- Pretty much a lurker here, but a regular one. Despite the lack of overt mention of the place name, I'm pretty positive that this is a Moose trip report. Sounds pretty good. I had a fantastic ski trip there over MLK weekend. You can see the TR in t4t from around that...

    Your best "Worst Trip"

OK I'll give you one. When I grew up, my Dad lived in Oregon and my mom in Mass, so my brother and I would go out to OR in the summer to see my dad. He remarried and then when I was 10 years old we arrived out there to find out that he was re-divorcing and our nice west coast family was...

    Tucks spring season

Last month on a trip there my son was ahead of me by 10 min or so and took off his pack right at the primo seat on top of the biggest luch rock. It was a warmish sunny morning without too much wind. Over howls of protest from him and his cousin I insisted we move from this great spot to a lame...

    Tucks spring season

Tucks is fantastic NOW. The sherbie is open top to bottom and the snow is softening to corn on south facing slopes! My 12 yr old son and I and another father son pair skied from the summit to the car, through the ravine both up and down, last Saturday. We are not crazies. It was more than...

Campsites near the top of Mount Webster?

Thank you very much! Now we just have to get there... Looks like a superb weather forecast this weekend. Whit

Campsites near the top of Mount Webster?

Can anyone tell me if there are good campsites near the top of Mount Webster? If so, how far down from the summit? Unless we can get a ride, we'll be coming up from the north side, not up the AT, so if the best sites are down to the south it would be nice to know how far. Thanks! Whit

    Nauman area Campsites this weekend?

Thanks, Trailbiscuit. Ethan Pond... Well, I thought about that, but the opportunities to get up high, above treeline to a summit, seem less over there...Thoreau falls would be within range, but Zeacliff would be too far, and Mt Willey would be a backtrack on the middle day...I never have been...

    Nauman area Campsites this weekend?

Well, it looks like the weekend plans have changed again and we're probably heading to Crawford Notch. I'm wondering how full Nauman Tentsite is likely to be this weekend and what other tenting options there are nearby-- Tisdale Spring? Other spots on the AT between Webster Cliffs and Nauman...

    Two night Baldface trip

Greg thanks for the reply. I'm thinking the best spot for the second night will be right around the Eagle link trail junction...It's good to know that we should be able to find something somewhere in the area. Anyway, these VFTT tips have been very helpful. Whit

    Two night Baldface trip

Thanks-- I had been thinking that the south ledges with packs would be a challenge...so I think you are talking about right here . But what I really want to know is, What about the second night? I don't want to go back down the Bicknell or north half of the baldface circle trail before spending...

Or.. a two night Chocorua trip

My other thought for Columbus Day is Chocorua-- again, a two night trip. I'm not familiar with the area at all, so I'm looking for ideas. I'd like to keep the pace very easy for my 7-year old--- 3 or 4 miles per day. Ideally we'd stay in tents rather than shelters, and I'd really like to have...

    Two night Baldface trip

I'd like to bring my family on a two night trip over the Baldfaces. We'll have my 7- and 9- year olds, so I think three days total would be a good pace for this. The shelter is an obvious spot to spend one night, but I'd really like to know whether there are any good places to camp along the...

Dads and Kids on the Bigelows 8/23-25

We did this trip 2 weeks ago, but I just got back recently and am getting around to posting this, my first trip report here... There were four of us: Me, and my 9 year old Eli, and Lorne and his 8 year old Chace. Eli now has 11 4000-footers and a few backpacks under his belt, but it was Chace's...

    Campsite near Bigelow

I was there 2 weeks ago. The road isn't too bad but you may or may not want to drive it to the actual campsites. We were in a minivan with about six people inside, and we scraped once and turned around before we got to the Stratton Brook Pond outlet. You don't really go up much at all-- the road...

    Easy Bigelows two-night trip

Thanks for the replies. It's especially useful to know that there's no good spot between Stratton and Horns-- It would be discouraging to arrive at Cranberry Pond hoping for a spot, then have to continue up and over to Horns without having psyched the kids up for it. I'll let the board know how...

    Easy Bigelows two-night trip

I'm almost off to Rangeley, and if I can't pull together my saddleback trip the backup plan is a two night trip in the Bigelow range. I may be able to spot a car, not sure yet. It looks now like I'll have an 8-yr old kid on his first overnight as well as my more experienced 9 yr old son. So...
