Looking like a dry start to the summer

Apparently there were/are a couple of fires in Albany. One at the covered bridge (may have started in the campground) and another near route 16. Not a good start to the summer.

    Bootleg sign?

Correct. The sign should not be made this way. Even the fasteners are problematic. Whoever put up the sign clearly did not coordinate with the USFS. The WODC went through this transition for Wilderness signage MANY years ago. (Don't mean to launch a debate about Wilderness signage. Just...

Flat Mountain Pond Trail - in or out of Wilderness & bikeable?

The trail and the shelter are just outside the Wilderness. I rode it years ago, but I would only recommend biking if you enjoy the challenge. It won't save you much time (if any) over walking.

Little Help with Acadia Trail Rec

Gorham Mountain is a good choice for a sunrise walk. Also consider Beech Mountain. You can go half way up the fire tower for a slightly better view. You'll be watching the sun rise above the eastern half of the island, but it's still a good vantage point that is lightly used by sunrise watchers.

AMC maps now available for smart phones

WODC is also planning an electronic version of their new Sandwich Range map. Like the new AMC maps it will be a geo-referenced PDF that can be viewed with Avenza. The big advantage of this format is that it can be used offline, with your GPS position shown on the map in real-time. Although I...

    More trail closings?

Looks like the link to Exhibit A is finally working: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd729238.pdf FYI, the closure cites 36 CFR 261.53(e) Special closures When provided in an order, it is prohibited to go into or be upon any area which is closed for the protection of Public...

Big list of WMNF toilet facility closures

From the WMNF Facebook page earlier today: Today, Saturday, we're seeing summer levels of traffic on the Kancamagus Scenic Byway, with trailhead parking lots overflowing onto the roadway. The White Mountain National Forest asks the public to please recreate responsibly while following CDC...

Skiing this weekend in the Pemi

The snow was wet when it fell yesterday, but it's dried out with the colder temps so you can expect mostly powder on Saturday.

E-bikes now allowed in National Parks

It will be interesting to see how this is implemented at Acadia National Park, which has been consistently enforcing the traditional non-motorized use of the carriage roads. For the last two years they've had signs prohibiting eBikes at the primary carriage road entry points.

Appalachia Parking Area - The New Lafayette Place?

Yes, there has been overflow for some years, but not at the current levels, which is prompting WODC and other organizations to take the parking issue more seriously than they have in the past.

Appalachia Parking Area - The New Lafayette Place?

Thread drift: The problem is widespread. The Wonalancet parking lot is regularly overfilled, with a long line of cars parked along the road (to the dismay of the neighbors).

    Eastern Puma declared Extinct

We saw one crossing the road at Cape Breton Highlands some years ago. Definitely a large cat with a long curved tail. It was very distinctive. We reported it to the park and were quizzed at some length by a specialist, who agreed that our details were consistent with a cougar rather than...

Garmin 60CSX no longer recognized by Windows 10 computer

Based on this thread, I was apprehensive about 60CSX compatibility with Windows-10, but I've just built a new Windows-10 system (Creators Edition, 64 bit) and have had no trouble at all with MapSource or communications with the GPS. The direct GPS Import/Export works fine, as does the mass...

Old trail near Algonquin Trail, Sandwich, N.H.

I think that was an access to Black Mountain Pond, providing the shortest route for construction and maintenance of the former shelter. I suspect it still sees occasion use by hikers and campers going to the pond.

You can drive all the way to the Liberty Trail parking lot. The road is never gated, just not plowed in winter.
