Mr Pizza in Gorham is Closing (Now Reopened under new owners)

This is very sad. We come up usually for a week in July and we've been coming up for the last 17 years. Recently what we've been doing is staying at a motor court with cottages and cooking our own food since about 2020 when everything was closed. I really like the pizza in twin Mountain I forgot...

Hiking Suggestions within 2 hrs of Albany during Hunting Season

downstate here in harriman park there is NO HUNTING ALLOWED EVER. however we do see hunters every so often on the woods roads in the southeastern section of the park near 202, and in the southern part of the park south of where the HTS meets the 7hills trail close to the park boundary.

west point invades Harriman state Park!

the reality is that the NY budget for parks is dwindling each year. it is unfortunate but one of the bright spots is that there are fewer rangers around in harriman to enforce ridiculous rules such as those relating to off trail hiking, swimming, and dogs. of course if a dog misbehaves and...

    Favorite White Mtn swimming holes

i love russell pond for real swimming. water is very warm for the whites. steve smith's book "ponds and lakes of the white mts" has lots of good recommendations. it depends whether you want to dunk in a pool to get cool or really swim. i personally like to swim about 1/2 mile or more per day...

west point invades Harriman state Park!

loved the cadets -they were very sweet and polite..called me "ma'am" and all...thought it was rather amusing that they were given a rather sketchy map and were supposed to navigate by using their maps and compasses in an area which is totally full of blazed trails. some got totally lost and i...

Hikes on/near the NY/NJ/PA sections of the AT

harriman is gorgeous, 50k acres and hundreds of miles of trails. i hike there almost every day, so you can PM me if you want to join our hiking group and do some fun stuff there. unfortunately march kindof sucks as the snow melts and the bare ground is there and no green yet, but if we still...

hey--banjolady here--as a slowpoke i cannot do the SBM in one day but i have done it all numerous times in sections, and i would concur that S to N is the prettiest if not easiest way to do it. i do an 8 mi shuttle hike from gate hill to cats elbow which i think has some of the nicest parts...
