What type of vehicle do you drive?

:) Subaru Outback. Last December, I sold my 2001 for a 2005. Wouldn't want to drive any other vehicle right now and never a SUV.

Indian Lake (Adk's) supermarket to close 8/27

It is a Tops, :) and it's not scheduled to close. (I just called the Rite Aid next to it-had to get it over with!). Thanks - happy hiking!

Indian Lake (Adk's) supermarket to close 8/27

I don't think so, Rivet. I believe the Price Chopper is in the newer "mall" on the left side of 86 going toward Ray Brook. The supermarket I am thinking about is on the left side of 86 going into Lake Placid (there is a traffic light here and I recall a car wash(?)). There is a Rite Aid there...

Indian Lake (Adk's) supermarket to close 8/27

What is the name of the supermarket (I forgot) right outside of Lake Placid on Rt. 86 (located in the "strip" with the dollar store, liquor store)? That's where I plan to get provisions next week.

    Ray Brook to Upper Works

Should we travel 73 to the Northway to the North Hudson exit and travel 2 to Upper Works OR should we travel down through Tupper and Long Lakes and pick up the Upper Works road from 28N? From the map, 2 looks fairly straight, not too twisty as 73. Also, how "scenic" is this road? Joel...

    How far do you drive?

6-7 hours from the Jersey shore to Ray Brook, 2-3 times a year (approx. 350 miles). We'll then drive sometimes over an hour to a trailhead. We save a lot of change in our Gatorade containers toward gas and tolls. It helps a lot.

    So. NJ Hikes?

I live in Ocean County, about an hour from Brendan Byrne State Forest, formerly Lebanon State Park, located on Rt. 70 in New Lisbon. There are about 25 miles of sandy trails here. Several are over sandy roads. I recently hiked the Mt. Misery loop (about 9 miles-shared with mountain bikes...

    Thanksgiving Weekend in High Peaks...

We'll be on some lesser peaks in the high peaks area from Thanksgiving Day through the weekend. Weather reports indicate snow showers all weekend with day time highs averaging about 35. We're leaving the snow shoes home :( bringing gaiters and instep crampons just in case.

    s. meadow/car camping

Thanks, too, Pete. I'll be hiking Mt. Hoevenburg from South Meadow on Thanksgiving Day and will wear lots of bright orange--don't want to be mistaken for someone's prospective Thanksgiving Day dinner!

    Adirondacks easier peaks?

Owl's Head Lookout; Gilligan; Hurricane; Mt. Jo; and Hopkins, which, for modest effort, provides a TREMENDOUS reward.

    no hikin' is killin' me!

Cross the GW Bridge into Jersey and head toward Palisades Interstate Park. Several trails follow the Hudson River and up to the cliffs of the Palisades where there are great views. The boulder climbing is very challenging. Maybe you'll be lucky to see the den of foxes close to the river...

All the leaves are brown (Hope Not!)

Two weeks ago, the first maples and beeches were turning red and yellow. Heard on weather.com that the ADKs would be "peak" this weekend. With a nice, clear sunny weekend coming up, the colors are sure to be spectacular.

    lake lila/mtn fredrica

Don't remember exactly how far in the road went, it was at least 6-7 miles, and we did it in a Honda Accord several years ago with no problems. What a beautiful, peaceful area. The view of Lake Lila from Mt. Frederica is superb.

Best After Hike Meals in High Peaks

Had a great sandwich and an ale at the Baxter Mt. Tavern after recently hiking Owl's Head Lookout. The Black Bear Inn is good for lunch too. Sorry, but IMHO, after a long day hike, there is nothing like your homemade tomato and meat sauce over pasta, sipping red wine while all is cooking in a...

McKenzie Mt UMP - need your help

HURRAY!! I will finally be in the Adirondacks for ten days beginning 9/3, intending to stay away from the High Peaks this trip, fishing and "bagging" the lesser peaks (Owl's Head Lookout, Floodwood, Hopkins and Indian Head are on the list). Thank you for bringing St. Armand (Moose Mt.) to our...

    New Jersey Hikes

Visit the NY NJ Trail Conference Website. There, under Trails, you will find a good selection of hikes. Any Pine Barren trails can be hiked in sandals, particularly Brendan Byrne State Forest (Batona Trail) (formerly Lebanon State Forest). If you can, try the northwest state trails: Stoke's...
