    !2k to 13k CO peaks.

I lived about five years near Salida. The 14ers.com page has a 13ers section. Look at the Sawatch, Mosquito, and Ten Mile Ranges. Out of St Elmo you can hike CDT Collegiate West which is all alpine and runs over 12 k. Also Tin Cup Pass above there has Tincup Peak and Emma Burr and more if you...

New AMC Maine Mountain Guide is out

When I moved to Maine in 06, the current MMG was terrible. Carey improved and expanded it quite a bit. I ended up leaving ME so I never got the newer editions but check them out when I’m in ME and glad to see it expanded. The maps also expanded and improved quite a bit from the earlier editions...

    NH Rattlesnakes Article

When I lived in CO, the vaccine was pretty common as were dogs bit by rattlesnakes. I also seen rattlesnake aversion classes for dogs to learn to fear them.

    NH Rattlesnakes Article

I know NY is more than happy to earn you about the population on the Tongue Range. I saw a long shed on the rocks in that area that led to a probable den under rocks slightly off trail. I grew up in PA and saw them frequently. In parts of PA they’re almost a given that you’ll see them. On a PA...

    Current Maine 4K List

I lived in Maine 8 years and have done the 14 4ks. Spaulding and Readington are definitely climbed just to finish the list. I never saw anything listing there elevations above 4000’. I’ve seen 3983’ I believe for both. They have that rule for measuring for I believed a non benchmarked peak( (...

ADK Fire Towers- Adams, Snowy, and Buck

I’ve been visiting lower ADK peaks lately with views. As long as the weather cooperates, open fire towers are a sure thing for views in the ADK. I hit Adams first-known for its views of the High Peaks first. On the way home from Adams I checked out the newly opened Buck Mountain. The next day I...

Buck Mountain, Long Lake (Fire Tower)

Was the trail busy? I was there 2pm on a Thursday about 10 days ago and it was super busy, I passed probably a dozen groups. I also find it interesting that such a short trail has one of the largest free tTrailhead parking lots in the ADK. I thinks it’s bigger than the new Upper Works lot even.

    Devil’s Path plus Hunter 9/7/23

I was down to my last two peaks for the 115. Having done Both the Presidential and Great Range Traverses in a day I have wanted to do the Devils Path. I just finished Slide for 114 the day before. Why not knock out both the 115 and Devils Path at the same time. I recruited a sucker to join in...

Buck Mountain, Long Lake (Fire Tower)

I just hiked this the other day since I live just 20 mins away. It offers beautiful views over Little Tupper Lake. You can see neighboring Coney and Goodman Mtns as well as Mt Morris and a sliver of Tupper Lake. The hike is very quick at 1.2 miles each way. I will be writing about several fire...

    Canines at altitude.

I regularly headed out in Sept and generally stuff melts off pretty quick that time of year by afternoon, even at high elevations since the sun at elevation is so intense. Most rain events in the valley have at least some white in them in High Rockies that time of year though. The monsoon is...

    Canines at altitude.

I lived in CO and have climbed many13ers and 14ers with my dog. He has no problems but I lived at 7500’ so no acclimating necessary. I have heard of low elevation visitors having sluggish dogs when they arrive. Acclimate in Leadville or Similar elevation a day if you can and let your dog...

    Cannon 8.2.23

Cannon via Kinsman Ridge- one of the shortest hikes to a 4,000ft summit in NH. I did this 30 mins after finishing up Owls Head in the morning. This happened to be #48 in NH and 67 in New England 4,000 footers. My first New England climb was 7/8/99 on Killington and NH on 7/14/99 while thru...

    Owl’s Head 8.2.23

With 46 of the 48 down, it was finally time to hit Owl’s Head and see if it deserved its reputation as a view less slog. I was pleasantly surprised. The views from Black Pond are lovely, Lincoln Brook is as nice as any mountain stream, and the views from the slide were better than I expected...

    The Willeys 8.1.23

My first 4000 foot summit in NH was July 14th 1999. That was Moosilauke on my AT thru hike. I knew nothing of the 4000 footers and had no intention of hiking them. I lived in PA at the time. Now living ion ME 10 years later I backpacked in NH completing the Cohos Trail combined with aNorthern...

    Sleeping bag age?

I have a cheap550 or 650 down 5degree EmS branded bag I got in 2001 that lives in its storage bag. Every few years I bring it out for a late season outing and it is always very toasty and lofty. I have probably gone ten years at one point without using it and it was nice and fluffy. I always...

    A10s buzzing the notches

The F35s I see in the ADK are usually pretty high but you see them dropping chaff or flares occasionally. I hear the booms every couple months. I am originally from PA and I’d routinely see A10s fly between Willow Grove NAS and Ft Indiantown Gap. I would hear them on Reading...

    A10s buzzing the notches

Is this usual in the area? I was parked at Crawford Notch by the train station Tuesday around 1230 changing in my van and heard the roar. A second one came doing a very low run through the notch before climbing steeply. This was repeated. The next day coming down Owls Head I heard it again but...

    Be prepared

On literally the first day of my AT thru hike I lost my spoon after dinner. Ended up using a butter knife I found in the shelter for three days until I got to town to get something more appropriate. That was 24 years ago I never packed multiples of spoons. I do triple check though now to keep...
