    Mount Madison Rescue

"RESCUE ME" "Is it safe to say?" (c'mon,c'mon) "Was it right to leave?" (c'mon,c'mon) "Will I ever learn?" (c'mon,c'mon) "Things were good when we were young."

    Mount Madison Rescue

Age = Experience? I noticed that a couple of posters have jumped on these individuals based on the argument that they were "old enough to know better", or that there age somehow prepared them to know what they were getting into. Based on that argument I should now be ready to climb Mount...

whackin' and avoiding taking one in the eye

"You'll Poke Your Eye Out!" Last winter while waiting in the parking lot of Lafeyett for others in my group to get there gear together I decided to step into the woods just over the snow enbankments to take a wiz. Just as I was zipping up I made a slight sideways turn and bang " I poked my eye...

Free Play in the Woods Before Age 11

"Where Did You Go? Out. What Did You Do? Nothing." This is the title of a great book I came across that tells the story of the authors experiences growing up when kids just "went out to play" without all kinds of parental intervension and supervision. He tells the story with much humor and I...

The Highs and Lows of your hiking

Highs: Forgeting how old I am during a hike, and feeling 20 years younger. Lows: Forgeting how old I am after a hike, and feeling 20 years older. (Especially when I take that first step out of the car after the ride home.)

"RENEW NOW!...OR THE TREE GETS IT."

Bush League I guess when I started this thread I was'nt really looking to trash the AMC but to express my dismay and disapointment that they would stoop to guilt tripping there members into renewing their memberships. Seemed kinda like a cheap manipulative tool in which to motivate folks. The...

"RENEW NOW!...OR THE TREE GETS IT."

Just got a renewal letter from the AMC that states, "Your current membership will soon be due for renewal. And we're hoping you will take this opportunity to renew your membership thereby saving untold trees and acres of landfill that additional reminders will require." Am I to believe that I'm...

    Exercise

I think if your goal is to increase the over all tone of your body then doing exercises on "all" the machines you mentioned will help. If building strength and endurance for hiking is your goal then you'll have to customize your workout a bit in order to get the specific results you want. Most...

Dealing with the cold - moved from Q&A

I actually tried that technique years ago (25) when I first started climbing during the winter. My overall assesment of it's effectiveness is that it benifitted me mostly in a mental way by toughening my resolve to expose my body to uncomfortablely cold conditions, Period. I do'nt believe it...

What do you bring as emergency sleeping arrangements?

Reasonably Safe? Pete I think you've hit on an interesting point, which is "what's reasonable to carry while hiking in the event something goes wrong". I'm sure everyone would agree that the weather and terrain one's going to be hiking in would dictate what's wise to carry. Still I've seen...

What do you bring as emergency sleeping arrangements?

Survive The Night? What if the situation requires you to remain out two or more nights. Many of the pollsters here seem to be assuming they will be in ok condition to walk out the next morning after a night out. We're talking an emergency here, anything goes, broken bones, torn muscles or...

Cartographer Hikes All 1400 WMNF Map Miles (long)

Sweeper, I love the twist you put on Frost's poem. Taking a road less traveled is still traveling someone else's path. Charting your own course sounds so much more personal and exciting.

Berry picker shot by bear hunter in VT

I do'nt know much about color blindness but let's hope it does'nt include flourescent orange...otherwise were back to praying the hunter can tell the difference between animals and humans.

Berry picker shot by bear hunter in VT

I'm not convinced that the comparison between deaths due to drunken drivers and deaths due to hunting accidents (unless it's due to a drunken hunter) holds up. I do'nt expect a good outcome from someone who gets behind the wheel of a car while drunk, I do however have high expectations of...

Berry picker shot by bear hunter in VT

Understandable Frustration! I've been reading through this thread and find myself thinking that we as hikers are generally very responsible for our safety while out hiking. Most of us carry the proper gear and food and have familialized ourselves with the hiking routes we'll be using, etc...

    Have You Ever Defended Hiking?

Be Careful What You Ask For! Although I think it a tragic shame that so many people do'nt enjoy the pleasures of the outdoors nor can even conceive of enjoying them, I do think of how much more crowded it would be in the mountains if they did get it. Count it as a blessing in disguise.

Which hiking season is your drug of choice?

"rocky Mountain High" I will cast my vote as follows: Autumn, Winter, Summer, Spring. I have placed Autumn at the front of the list because no other season causes me to have what I'll call "a quickened senses experience". I feel very alive and alert, sometimes to the point of actually feeling...
