Hi Steve, I'm Danny B's friend. We did a bunch of Catskill peaks together back a few years ago when Danny was still hiking. Send me a private message. For some reason I can't send you a pm. Wondering what you have left on your winter 115. I have 3. Going to Baxter soon to attempt them again...

    Buying ball of boiled wool?

As far as washing machine and/or drier goes: top loading washers are better because they cause more FRICTION than front loaders. Using the dryer will work too with your WET mittens. It won't be difficult to make your mittens into a half-closed fist shape. They will shape themselves into that...

    Buying ball of boiled wool?

Making felted mittens, hats, booties, etc. used to be a hobby of mine. The process requires using friction, soap and warm water. The friction causes the fibers to knot together tighter and tighter. The soap makes the fibers slippery so they can get all knotted up like a bad rasta hairdo. I...

    Chamonix-Mont Blanc Massif: June 2009

Very impressive, indeed! And scary. Holy cr*p Arm, I'm glad you got out of that crevasse ok. Great shot from within. A couple of years ago Hanna and I did the Haute Route between Chamonix and Zermatt. It's a great way to experience the Alps for those who aren't as brave as these folks.

    mud and bugs?

I pretty much know the answer to this question, but I'll ask it anyway. Has anyone been up to Indian Pass from Upper works lately? What's the status with the bugs and mud? Hey I know it's wet and early summer and I know what that means. Just want to know if anyone has been on this trail lately...

Day 1 Trip B 1/17/09 Street and Nye (or the slow group recovering from various injuries and other excuses) After getting up early Saturday morning and driving for 31/2 hours to the trail head, Loren and I were surprised to meet up with Shizzy and BoB who were waiting at Heart Lake for us...

What is the equivalent of climbing Everest 16 times?

Seema and Brian were camping at Tiorati Circle in Harriman State Park last night (Sunday). They fell a little behind the original plan due to the heat. They hope to be at Fort Montgomery today, near Pauling NY on Thursday and in Kent, CT on Saturday to make it to the post office in time. The...

    Power Gel question

I have used gels at elevations above 19,000 ft. They are about the only thing I can 'eat' at higher altitudes. Never had a problem on the airline or in my pack.

    A weekend on the Hudson

Enjoyed reading your trip report Jay. I had a little adventure in Cold Spring the weekend before last. Went with some friends who were given wrong info about the best time to go into the marsh and still get out. We went through the marsh to the railroad bridge at the other end. Decided then...

Galehead Gourmet Group Galavant and Yoga Seminar

dave, I'm disappointed (not disenchanted) that your trip report was common (not unique) in the pattern (not logic) style. The food was yummy (not yucky) as always! I would like to express (not say) thanks to all (not most) who participated in this brilliant (not bright) Gourmet Galavant. nancy...

    Vermont

Just got back from a section hike on the AT/LT. While we didn't go over any 4kers, we spoke to a thru hiker who had come over Killington on Saturday. He said there was lots of snow. He used snowshoes and complained about sinking in. We came across a only a few patches of snow on the north side...

    Leaky hydration units.

I've always used Platys and yes, eventually they wear out like everything else in this world. But I have sent the problem children back and received replacements, often the newer model for no charge. The zip tops work for me. Easier to clean. Camelbacks taste bad.

Sherrill Mountain and North Dome -- 1/28/06

It was definitely a fun hike. Had lots of interesting conversations and met some amazing folks. How about Itty-bitty doing her 115 without a car! On that hike a few people lost some gear (myself included). I went back up the next day following the tracks from the fisherman's parking lot. Found...
