Petition to change the name of Mt Washington

Jack hammers no longer the tool of choice, having given way to Browning torch drills years ago, as used for the nearby Crazy Horse monument In NW South Dakota. Speaking of which, the high point of South Dakota had its name changed from Harney Peak, named in 1855 after General William S. Harney...

more New England mountain lion rumors

Any more mountain lion sightings in New England of late? Friends along Boulder Creek in Boulder, Colorado, now routinely have mountain lions visiting their houses and even living under their decks, a bit unnerving.

High point of Wales formerly known as Mount Snowden recently returned to its original name Yr Wyddfa. Just a matter of time before Mount Washington returns to its original name Agiocochook (or Agiochook).

Petition to change the name of Mt Washington

Thanks for the set up, Grey J. Yes, Cleveland Mountain is named after Grover “Ma, Ma, Where’s My Pa” Cleavlend, 22nd and 24th President of the United States and one of only two Democrats elected President between 1861 and 1933. At age 47, he was one of only two bachelors to become President...

Petition to change the name of Mt Washington

Took almost 24 hours for someone to take my bait; I would make a lousy fisher-person. Charles Thomas Jackson (1805-1880) initiated New Hampshire’s Geological Survey in 1839 and was New Hampshire’s first State Geologist. The Town of Jackson replaced our 7th President Andrew Jackson with C.T...

    Presidents Weather question/advice?

Came close with snowboarder in Tuckerman’s this spring, but he amazingly self-rescued from the ”bergshrund” after falling in from the headwall above.

Petition to change the name of Mt Washington

Not really, as there are several peaks in the Presidential Range not named after presidents, like Clay, Franklin, Webster, and Jackson.

    Presidents Weather question/advice?

Not aware of any fatalities in the Presidential Range since the last three listed from 20 June, 1 August, and 25 August 2022. Please elaborate.

Petition to change the name of Mt Washington

I spent a bit of time looking for pre-existing Native American names for those other peaks that you list, but could not find any, so no need to rename them, in my opinion, just the tallest one that already had a name, before the White Man renamed It. This thread has a long way to go to catch up...

Petition to change the name of Mt Washington

I am sure that the post by maineguy is correct. But, my opinion is that naming boats after mountains is dumb, as would be naming mountains after boats.

Yup, a really embarrassing typo that I will need to deal with for the rest of my life. Will fix immediately.

    Route to Owls Head

The “old peak” is really easy to miss now, as the trail to the “new peak” is no longer the sketchy herd path that it once was.

So, the name of the USS McKinley should be changed to the USS Denali?

    Gene Daniel Has Passed Away

When I sent Gene my list of completed wNEHH peaks for the patch back in the day, I must have mentioned that I was beginning to work on the NH4s grid that got me a four-page, single-spaced typed letter in return imploring me to be more creative and come up with a better hiking objective. I did...

Petition to change the name of Mt Washington

You are making my point. If the USN wishes to recognize a former president or a famous state geologist, then use their full names, such as USS William McKinley or USS Josiah Whitney, rather than the names of mountains, which seems dumb to me.

    Presidents Weather question/advice?

I like the advice to check the weather the morning after your overnight stay at Madison hut and then if the weather is bad, maybe just tackle Mount Madison and/or Mount Adams, and then head down. Then drive around to the Cog Road USFS Ammi parking lot and hike up the Ammi Trail to Lakes of the...
