Pinkham (PNVC) today.....looked like rescue practice of some kind?

Glad to hear a good outcome! I was hiking Widcat D, via Polecat, and saw an Army helicopter flying around near the ravines.

Beginner Winter Hiking in the Whites

Some great suggestions so far. I have a couple of ideas also. Mr Willard, Avalon, and Pierce are all sound options in the Crawford Notch area. THey tend to get broken out soon after a storm and are moderate in terms of length and steepness. Pierce requires a little more fitness, but it is...

    Roadside camping near Conway?

Hmmm... I guess that is right. I drive by both frequently so I guess they merged in my mind. Either will work assuming they are open.

    Roadside camping near Conway?

Wihte Ledge state park is right off Route 16 just south of Conway. Not free but pretty cheap. There are also a couple of campgrounds off the Kanc not far from Conway, also I think state run. There may be private optinos too...

Wildcat new owners - Polecat still open?

Hello, I am a regular at Wildcat and a season passholder. Jury is very much still out on these new owners. ... they seem to have ticked off most of the locals, the race team and probably the hiking community.. There are now new rather inhospitable signs at the bottom of the major access points...

Whitney Mountaineers Route (Don't know the answer)

For what it is worth, I descended MR in early June many years ago in snowy conditions. It is steep but did not seem bad; we were back at UBS lake in 2.5 hours from the summit. I should add that we ascended by rock climbing the East face with a bit too much snow still on the route, a bit of an...

Nope, I definitely did not get there. Not subtle...

Merriman State Forest, Bartlett Mtn., transitioning snowshoe hare, April 13 '08

Great report, Forest . We rent seasonally ( my kids ski race) just at the base of Bartlett Mtn. I have poked around a bit but have never been sure I reached the top; I don't think so quite. There is an old sign near the Eagle Ridge end of things saying "Kearsarge 3 miles" but not much of a...

    South Moat, January 1, 2008

Trail: Moat Mountain Trail Date: January 1, 2008 Trail conditions: lightly packed snow, no ice, excellent snowshoeing and steady snowfall starting 40 minutes in. Required equipment; Snowshoes, winter gear. Mild day but cold on the summit. Poor visiblity and only my tracks on the very top, so...

    Wildcats in winter

I did this hike via 19 mile Brook, wildcat ridge A -E then down the Polecat last winter, in much icier conditions than we have now. I took an ice axe ( I was also solo) and wore crampons, but the slide area was not a problem. I would guess with the recent snowpack the trail over the slide area...

Not to worry; people throw up on Mt Blanc all the time!!

Mt Blanc - Hard Decision - Appreciate Input

Hi Hanna I don't know if this helps but there is really only one very exposed ridge on the Gouter route ( the summit ridge), plus a semi-exposed ricky section up to the hut. Most of the route is a long walk in the snow, strenous and high, certainly need to be able to walk in crampons but not...

Lost Hiker on Mt Lafayette - FOUND!

I have followed this thread with great interest, largely because this hiker was not, or did seem to be, the classic "jeans and sneakers" beginner who gets into trouble. Yes, he undertook more than was prudent in terrible weather, but apart from that, the things which went wrong could have...

Night Hiker Dies On Mount Monadnock

Is it clear the death was fall-related? ie not a heart attack . Very sad news regardless. Conditions are somewhat icy and mixed now; probably worse further South than up North.

have you ever hiked to a closed hut expecting it to be open?

I also voted no. I think this issue explains some of the reaction to the Madison rescue; not so much anger but absolute incredulity. I suppose to be fair someone with limited experience who did not frequent either this or the AMC web site might not know the hut system ( though they might have...

    Mount Madison Rescue

I thought Jade made a very good point on positive reinforcement, but it kind of defies human nature to refrain from any venting about perceived stupidity. And frankly, if one of them was my child, there would be some criticism before the positive reinforcement. And both would be appropriate.

Did the rescuers say where they were when they were found??

    Mount Madison Rescue

I agree we should not pillory them, and certainly I am no Lord of the Board ( but that is a great title), but I am not so sure it is inappropriate to point out how dangerous it is to walk up that hard a trail in unsettled weather to a hut which is closed, with no preparation for bad weather. One...

    Mount Madison Rescue

The Union Leader had a bit more info today. Apparently they went up the Madison Gulf Trail, pretty aggressive this time of year, and they did plan to stay at the Madison Hut. They were described as inadequately prepared for winter conditions etc. The SAR person was concerened about hypothermia...
