    Bugs In Southern NH

Hiked S pack yesterday and took the time to prepare with lots of bug spray, but was amazed that there were no black flies or mosquitoes. Even the dreaded eye nats were non existent. Anyone else experiencing the same? With all of the recent wet weather, I was expecting worse.

Don't Ignore The Symptoms Of Heart Issues!!!!!!!!!

This thread was prompted by reading of the passing of member Paradox. I only wish that I could inspire as many hikers as he did. I hiked Skatutakee in NH last weekend and felt out of sorts. Had to stop a lot and catch my breath. Never happened to me before. Took a few walks earlier this...

    Monadnock via Pumpelly

It's been a long time since I posted a trip report, but due to the recent flooding in the Dublin NH area, I wanted to give an update. The Pumpelly trail is completely passable, but is very wet with water in places that are usually very dry. Not surprising considering the recent rainfall...

Blueberries are getting ripe in SW NH!!

Hiked up the Pumpelly trail to the Cascade Link and the blueberries are ripening up nicely. Still only 20% or so on the ridge, but they were tasty on a warm July day. Next weekend should be even better. I'll try to hit N. Pack and will report what I find, or not! :D

Another year with no bugs in S NH?

What a perfect day in May for a hike!! Stayed local with a hike up S. Pack via the Raymond trail. Applied deet at the trail head but could have avoided it. Just a few mosquitoes when I stopped to take pics of the abundant lady's slippers along the trail, nothing else. The last 3 years have been...

South Pack Monadnock-Wapack-Auto Road- VFTT Sticker Sighting 2/18/13

Did a quick trip up the Wapack to test out the Hillsound trail crampon pros that I picked up for $19(returns) at EMS last week. Didn't really need them as I had to go out my way to find ice to test them on, but I really like how easy they are to put on and take off, and their traction was...

Snow Lovers May Be Rejoicing On Friday 2/8

It is looking very likely that the New England area will experience a significant snow storm(Nemo) on Friday into Saturday morning. It's still a little unclear whether the heaviest accumulations will be over southern or northern areas, but current forecasts and models are saying that southern NH...

    Metal Water Bottle Danger

I just saw This Report from Today News about kids getting their tongues stuck inside metal water bottles. Not common, but I thought that those with kids should know.

New Product - Hillsound Freesteps6 - very similar to Kahtoola Microspikes

I was in my local EMS store today and saw these Hillsound Freestep6 today. At $39.99, they look like a direct competitor to Microspikes, but these have small silicone anti-balling pads on some of the spikes. I still have the Hillsound Trail Crampon knockoffs but I thought that others may be...

Leave The Wallet In The Car! - And Open Thank You To An Amazing Hiker Couple

Wanted to hike Monadnock today, and to avoid the crowds I started from the Gilson Pond Trail head for the Birchtoft Trail. Only a few cars at the parking area so I decided to carry my wallet in my pack as I knew it had some cash in it. 1st mistake, I should have tucked it under the carpet under...

Temporary Wapack Trail Relocation 5/9/12 Emerson Hill-Binney Hill Rd

I saw this posted on the message board at EMS in Peterborough. A section of the Wapack just to the north of Watatic & Nutting Hill is closed due to logging. A 1.75 mile detour is shown HERE. The Wapack.org site doesn't say how long the detour will be in place.

Caribou Trail, northern section - Caribou Mountain 10/7/11

10/7/11 This northern section of the Caribou trail between the trail head at the end of Bog Rd and the Mud Brook trail junction seems to receive little use. I cleared many years of accumulated debris from the old water bars, but the trail still has a few boot sucking mud spots. One muddy area...

Grand opening of New Monadnock Campground

Some of you may already know about this, but for those who don't, the new campground at Monadnock opened in July. There is an article about it in today's Union Leader but I couldn't find it online. The campground is located at Gilson Pond which is just north of the state park entrance road...

South Pack-Marion Davis Trail and Auto Road

1/12/10 Nicely packed trail, just a few icey spots. The auto road has been "groomed" by a tracked vehicle with a 6' blade. Very nice packed powder. Skiing down the road was a blast! Unfortunately, I didn't find the lost GPS.

    Hit or Miss? Snow 12/20/09

Got tired of AMC/Highland Center debates, so need to turn to snow. Originally projected to go south(sounds familiar) but the latest runs of at least one of the major models has the storm hitting NE on Sunday. Sorry, I'm an S.A. (snow addict) and I don't want to be "cured". I won't even...

    Monadnock - Cascade Link-Spellman-Pumpelly-White Dot

12/4/09 Trail Conditions: Wet! Cascade Link is a running stream, another hiker said the Red Spot was the same. The White Dot was a little dryer. No ice anywhere. Special Equipment Required: None Comments: Another t-shirt hike in December! Will definitely change if we get snow tomorrow...

Long Range Winter Forecast - Snowy

I know that it's early, but for the winter lovers among us:), Accuweather's Joe Bastardi is predicting a cold and snowy winter to come. HERE is the link to the full article. If this coming winter compares to 2002-2003 as the article states, we had 125" here in S. NH!
