INTO THE UNKNOWN: The Remarkable Life of Hans Kraus
Author slideshow/ book signing by Susan E.B. Schwartz (www.susanebschwartz.com)
Description: Hans Kraus was a legendary American rock climber in the 1940’s and 1950’s, making first ascents like the still terrifying, High Exposure, in the Shawangunk Mt. of New York State. But Kraus led a life outside of the mountains, making “ first ascents” in medicine also ahead of his time: Cover story of major magazines throughout the 1950’s, guest of honor at Eisenhower’s White House, first to identify the link among muscles, exercise, fitness and health, first to warn Americans that children weren’t getting enough exercise, Kennedy’s secret White House back doctor . . . As American Alpine Club former president, Jim McCarthy said, “His cojones were so big, he needed a bag to carry them in!” (FYI: The Boston Globe recently ran a front page news story on Hans Kraus and his medical accomplishments.
