The Sawyer River road is of course closed due to hurricane Irene damage. The washout is impressive. Getting by it in the winter could be dicey. The road walk adds four miles round trip to this non winter hike.

On the way in we took the whack on the first section partly because I wasn't sure how difficult the crossing would be and partly because I'd never done the whack. The whack is not difficult although a well defined herd trail has not yet formed. On the way back we did the crossing which today was not too difficult. The other crossings were easily done.

This morning there was a light dusting of snow from Rt. 302 up to 2500' and a light covering thereafter. The snow was recent and never more than an inch deep. It was inconsequential going up but made the rocks over the upper half slippery on the way down. There was not enough snow for micro spikes. The lower section had completely melted by the time we returned.

The temps were just slightly above freezing as we headed up but dropped below freezing around 4000'. The tower was covered with rime ice. The views were good today especially earlier on.

From Rt. 302
Mileage 14
Elevation gain 3900
