I had pretty much decided the LX-3 was my (not necessarily anyone else's) ideal compromise trail camera. The recent LX-5 improves on it in two ways. First, the far end of the zoom range now extends to 90mm equivalent, which is more realistic as a zoom. Second, it will accept the Panasonic...

I have had a couple of memorable and (in retrospect pretty...memorable...memorably good) hikes in downpours. Moriah, believe it or not. Isolation as a second. Mind the hypothermia risk (even in the summer, especially as the ambient temps fall). :)
My wife, younger son and I went up Sabbaday Brook and down Pine Bend two days before Irene went through. Even then, we were all clear that we would have preferred to go up and down Pine Bend. The crossings on SB were less than clear and the rocks were very slippery. I dunked both feet in the...
Thank you for the great pics and write-up. In my 41+ years in the White Mountains, I still think Jefferson is possibly the most spectacular hike of them all. :)
I agree, and I'm pretty sure that most thinking people (which I also think is significantly less than a majority of the population ;) ) does continually calculate odds, but in these circumstances I'd be darned if I thought I could reliably and reasonably distinguish between 10% and 20%. ;)
I must be missing something.
Why would you not tell them that they are in danger, if you believe they are?
Why would you not tell them that their dogs are in danger, if you believe they are?
Why would you not tell them that they are endangering the bear, if you believe they are?
What is hard...
Well, good maps, but that doesn't answer the question. I bought my first WGM in 1972...couldn't find a 1969 edition used back then. I have every edition since then and a few older ones I've picked up in recent years. Size...size is everything. The last packable edition was the 1987 version...
Agree. Although things have worked out a little differently (water rather than wind the primary issue in 2011), this could have been another Hurricane of 1938. Combine that with the proven tendency of cretins to place themselves and first responders in mortal danger, and IMHO the USFS has...
We did the Tripes 8/24/11 for my younger son and wife. We went up Sabbaday Brook and down Pine Bend Brook with a roadwalk back to the vehicle. All three of us strongly agreed that we should have done Pine Bend Brook both ways. Although the water was not high, the stream crossings are poorly...
Unfortunately, it doesn't. This is endemic, far more common than so-called "common sense," which unfortunately seems to be rather uncommon. I like the idea of community service.
