    DEC closing campgrounds

Beaverkill closed Too too bad. My grandparents camped there in the 30's after they closed the campgrounds on Bear Mountain ( Harriman). I camped there in the 50's and 60's as a kid. Took my wife and son there in the 80's. Ah, an era passes.

    a good cup o' joe

Coffee more to above: Also no PLASTIC TASTE. I also use a titanium or stainless steel cup. I also use a glass Chemex drip at home. ( So I am really picky).

    a good cup o' joe

The Holy Liquid - Coffee I use the Snowpeak filter funnel. It folds flat, weigh nada, uses #4 filters. You use your own grind, blend, amount or what ever. The funnel has legs that sit well on a mug or if your careful a thermos ( as I make a cuple of cups at once, so I don't have to fire up the...

Should Views Points be kept open?

Viewpoints - Catskills I vote yes, with the case by case proviso. More and more summer hiking in the Catskills is in the "green tunnel". The views are disappearing. The problem this also creates is user disatisfaction. Hiker use is declining and thus public support for outdoor recreation will...

You know might be addicted to hiking...

You know you're addicted to hiking when undefined -you keep Nalgene bottles of water in the fridge, ready for hiking - just in case. -when you run out of a food item in the house, you say "Let me check my camping stuff" -whenever your wife wants to plan something she starts by asking "Are you...

    Harriman State Park

All gone Was out there this morning. Snow is pretty much all gone. Maybe north slopes and protected spots. Also some ice on the trails left from the hard pack of boots on snow. Mud and run off will be the deal for the next couple of days.

gaitor size Take the boot with to fit it. You don't want too big or you get snow up in between the boot & gaitor.

    Harriman State Park

Like any place you just have to be smart. Harriman is a great place with lots of possibilites to enjoy. The ATVs tend to be near the gas, power lines and some of the old access roads, especially on the east side of the Park. For remote sites, look at any of the mountains that do not have a...

    Schunemunt mtn, Hudson Highlands

Schunemunk Mt I live 6.5 mins from there. Hike it all the time (am before work). Summit is Orange County high point. Saw your tracks yesterday. The posted signs are bogus right there by the tree stands on Long Path. Views are great.
