Mid June in Rangeley, you can count on copious bugs. Mostly black flies but some deerflies, skeeters, and no-see-ums will probably be out by then. I was up there on Memorial Day weekend and the black flies were starting to get going a little.
Count on bugs and hope for windy weather.
I have analyzed the situation based on reading the posts on this thread. My conclusion is that the operators of the Highland Center decided that giving out free stuff to hikers is not a good business model.

Is there any talk of the Blackhead Range Traverse? If so I'm interested. I'm fairly low maintenance in a group and I have a car (I might have to clean it out a little).

Stowe Pinnacle is a high bang for the buck hike near Stowe. It's a popular trail that goes to a prominent rock outcrop on the Worcester Range. It's only about 3 miles round trip so it may not qualify as a 1/2 day hike depending on your capability. It's listed in the Day Hikers Guide to Vermont.
Hi Tom. It was good to meet you guys. Thanks for validating my whining about the overhanging trees. It really was a beautiful day out there. Lots of fluffy snow and "thermal management" was not a big problem. (Not much thermal to manage)
FWIW (INWM) I'm going to hike in the Catskills Saturday the 17th and Sunday the 18th. I'm not sure what I'm going to hike yet, I'm pretty far behind on my Catskill peakbagging so I am open to anything.
I was up there last weekend (14,15) on other business, but I know that they were saying all trails were open except the Saddle Trail. There was no snow on the Travelers or The Owl (3700 feet max). From the Travelers you could see fairly large snow patches remaining on Katahdin.

I visit often but I don't live there. I think the locals can do a fine job of handling the issue as they see fit. I don't think it is any of my business.
