All too true! My eyes have been playing tricks on me for years. I have to check even my self. Chris

"Scuttle But" is as suspect as any other source. There are few if any knowns. I trust my instinct as much as just about any thing, short of a given. One given is media are in it for the money. No offence intended, I do not begrudge any one a living. It could go any way with a cat or a cop...

Don't put any trust in the media. I think it will be more luck than effort to see one of these cats. However I have one of those DEC forms in my day pack. Take it slow. Chris

What an innovater! In the 60s, you could just buy the frame (or a copy) and make do with what was around. I still use one for utility around the home stead. Thanks to the man. Peace Chris

Oh, Mink Thanks for the 'White Fang' excerpt. Chris

In some of my experience with the powers that be, it was clear on hand often did not know what the other was doing. The DEC is not well liked from what I can tell. I wonder if this farmer kept evidence. I hope there is a weapon handy if any critter comes after 'me or mine'. As for now, am...

Thanks Rick and Mink for the recall. It may well be some of what Iv been seeing, past 300 yards, as big bob cats are, in fact, Lynx. I have come to the conclusion that cats like other beasts (the BBC had a fantastic insite with fox) have assimilated our patterns and have the genius to be...

Thanks Mink. Some cat tracks here do have hair in them. Chris

    frozen hydration systems

Lot's of good ideas in here. With bottles I don't top 'em off. The sloshing action seems to hold off freezing. Iv used plastic flasks, or a wine blatter (botta) for years under a few layers. A small Platapus is next up. At least when falling on 'em they don't hurt as much. I think booze...

Thanks, I wonder if Lynkx typically have hair marks in their tracks. I think they are around here. Krips the lion is huge, better get a bigger gun! Chris

Hey yeah, what's up with that rock? I think I see an out of scale guy ( moving) and may be a critter. I think the car could be as new as 71. I'd like to get a look at one of these cats, but would be plenty happy to get a good picture of just a plain bob cat. Pets have been disapearing around...

All I see are ghosts. Car I think more like 65-67. I could use a wagon like that for canoe carries. Chris

    Anyone ever broken through ice?

Cool recalls all, Thanks. I had forgoten some typical scenarios, first Lude dude is that a lufa in your pocket or are ya just excitable? (Al La May West. Except ouch!) Too funney. I have been told about that suction phenomana, but have not incountered it. I understand that can be very bad...

Rico, thanks, small world. I drove the basic area were the cat's are said to be, saw nothing to point a direction, may be over the week end I'll get a closer look in. Chris

The tail prints were intermintent and only in deep snow. Encon get's touchey about spotting, especially it there is a fire arm in the car. It does seem to be legal. I am thinking rather than stealth, an approach around the routine of farm work may get the camera inside that half mile. Chris

Thanks Rico, I have never seen colors in fish like in that head shot. Id make that wall paper, but it would frighten me wife. The body and scales look much like 'grass carp', which are a nuter (all female) hybred used to keep land locked ponds clean. My father in law worked for Onita Limited...

    Recent Mountain Lion Sightings

Thanks, I could use a better reference book. I have to wonder about the family aspect. Even beaver eventually kick out the young males. Moose show up, in the valley, looking at cows with romantic intentions! The long tail cat pair, well seen, were best seen feeding on a road kill deer. Today...

Only very new commers up here bother talking to the DEC. Try the Cooperative Extention. Or Call Ward Stone the NYS Wild Life Pathologiest directly , he is aproachable and frank. Blow fish? I'll have to look that one up. Fresh water? I understand Onita lake can be treacherous. Truxton? I'll...

Yes this whole area is rittled with caves. Well drilling around the park, in particular, is risky. Come winter's sustained below zero days one can find many vents and openings. Cat tracks are all over. Some show hair between the paws. My abused ears hear cows over a half a mile if they are...
