Wonakancet Range, Walden, Old Mast Trails

Deep snow. (8-14 inches) Five of us broke trail. Steeper sections a real challenge, especially coming down Walden where we took off snow shoes and butt slid carefully  a good per cent of the way. Snowed most of the morning, sun in afternoon. Wind at times. Equipment: snow shoes, layed...

    Rumford Whitecap 12/2/09

Up trail # 2 over extensive ledges. Spots of ice and snow, but did not need microspikes. Came down trail # 1 and used microspikes part way. It was like hiking in three seasons: fall, winter and spring. Trail # 1 very wet. Views from the ledges and top were fantastic.

    Dry River Bridge 11/25/09

Workmen are finishing bridge replacement. The family was allowed to cross. At least the Forest Service is allowing one bridge to remain!

South Percy Peak via Old Summer Club Trail

Fabulous day. As with most trails, the lower sections were somewhat wet, especially on the way down. Some blow downs, but not difficult. Trails a little slippery in the upper sections, but no traction needed. Temperature ranged from 28 degrees at the beginning and warmed to low 50s at mid-day...

    Pondicherry Preserve Oct. 18

Access via Airport Road and old RR bed. Trails well signed except where Rampart Trail enters woods opposite Little Cherry Pond Trail. That is where the Colonel Whipple Trail starts going north. Trail is mucky, but has many log bridges in good condition. Logs wrapped in chicken wire to make...

    Garfield Falls Oct. 18th

Long drive in on deterioating dirt roads. Follow directions in WM Guide carefully. Nice short hike from kiosk down to falls and out southern trailhead, but then up the road. Reminds you of Glen Ellis Falls. Little snow.

    Magalloway Mountain - Oct. 18th

Went up Coot Trail and down Bob Cat. Many footprints on Coot. Only moose and bear prints on Bob Cat. Four inches of snow near top, but did not need microspikes. Great views from up Fire Tower, if you dare.

    4th Connecticut Lake

Hiked Oct. 18th. Snow all the way up. Nice quiet pond. Very wilderness feeling. Was in Canada, but no passport needed to step back into USA. No microspikes needed.

    Diamond Peaks

Surprised to find locked gate making an extra 2.2 miles each way. Easy road walk and a surprising number of Darmouth related folks on the reserve on a Sunday afternoon. Very little snow or ice. Nice views into river valley below. No special equipment.

    Table Rocks

Hiked three trails on Table Rocks near the Balsams Oct. 16. Mountaineers trail up Table Rocks (.3 miles, 600 gain) had light snow and some ice. Microspikes very helpful 1/2 way up. Went down more gentle Table Rock trail and glad to have microspikes for safety. Mountaineers route was not...

    Davis Path

I was delighted to find a great deal of blow down removal on the Davis Path from Camel Trail (near Lakes of the Clouds) all the way to Route 302. Bogs were not bad, nor frequent. The 14.4 miles was relatively easy if you enjoy the steep descent at the end. Thanks to whoever did the trail work.

    Great Gulf - July 15

Hiked up the entire Great Gulf trail on a glorious day. The AMC book never mentioned that the trail up from Spaulding Lake is under waterfalls, making it very slippery and making hiker's very wet in addition. It was hard to stay erect on the last 0.5 mile due to strong wind.

The forest service hopes to have the Dry River Bridge completed by the end of July. Anyone interested in doing a two day loop hike up this Trail to Lakes of the Clouds hut at a moderately leisurely pace can sign up for the August 15-16 event listed on the AMC web site. trail conditions on Franconia Brook T and Twin Brook Trails?

Has anyone hiked the Franconia Brook Trail on the south side of Garfield Ridge Trail and the Twin Brook Trail up to the hut? I wondered if stream crossings were passable after all the wetness. Also we plan to hike up to Galehead hut via Gale River Trail and understand there is a bridge out on...

Found South Pond Road closed to Recreation Area where trailhead starts until 10 a.m.. Reversed to drive in on a dirt road and parked beside lake, hiking in on a dirt road to recreation area and trailhead. Trail was somewhat muddy with one significant brook crossing shortly after Devil's Hopyard...

    Calling all Red-liners

I am interested in finding people available to hike on Wednesdays and Fridays who don't expect to go fast, but enjoy finding the less traveled trails and don't mind car shuttling.

Winter Peaks in Vermont and Maine

I'm already getting excited about winter peak bagging and hope to do Vermont 4Ks as soon as winter officially arrives. Does anyone know the date and hour of arrival in winter. Do you need to start climbing after winter starts or can you start before winter starts and arrive on top after the...
