In the Waterville Valley area there is a lesser-known peak named Cone Mountain which is separated from the Welch-Dickey Mtns only by the narrow Dickey Notch corridor.
I began my trek at the Welch-Dickey trailhead and followed the Brown Ash Swamp Bike Trail northward to a point where I could avoid private land and head westward on public land to reach Cone Mountain.
The bike trail was in good shape. It was mostly dry, but there were a few muddy patches here and there. The bushwhack portion of the trek was mostly through open hardwoods until nearing summit where there were conifers which were not overly thick. There were a few cliffs to work around, but nothing that presented a major problem.
