Date of Hike: 1/25/14
Trail Conditions: about 12" of consolidated snow; 2" of powder on top of unsupportive crust. A few blowdowns that were easy to deal with. Stream crossing not a problem.
Special Equipment Required: snowshoes, carried crampons but didn't need them.
Comments: Van and I parked at the winter gate on Rt 113 which is located at the state line. The road from that point was well snowmo'd. We decided to use Laughing Lion rather than Royce to avoid two stream crossings. The trail from the stream up to the Royce Trail junction is steep but the snow provided good purchase. The upper sections have some ice but nothing that good snowshoes can't handle. Not much traffic on those two peaks this winter.
