I have a Garmin etrex Venture GPS and am looking at purchasing software for it.
Plan only to use hiking. I have heard National Gepgraphic TOPO is nice.

It will do the job. I have a Northeast (New England + NJ +NY) product (may no longer be available) and like it. Maptech Terrain Navigator is another reasonable choice.

Products from both suppliers contain scans of USGS topo maps. Both companies have USA topo products that cover the US at 1:100K scale and statewise (or small region such as New England) series that include 1:24K scale maps.

Either of the above will exchange waypoints, routes, and tracks with the GPS. Only Garmin Mapsource products will actually load maps into the GPS. (IIRC, the Venture has such a small mapping memory that it is hardly worth the effort. If you want a useful mapping GPS, it might be worth upgrading.)
