IS vs. Monopod....good or bad?

I know Image Stabilization + Tripod= Bad mojo, but what about monopods. I am considering adding a monopod to the photo arsenal, but if the IS is still going to need to be turned off I wonder if it really is worth it.......

IS + tripod is still probably better than no_IS + handheld

I'd turn the IS off when using a monopod, but if I was in a hurry I wouldn't worry about it.

A monopod is not as steady as a tripod so I would be willing to bet that IS would still help when you are using a monopod.

Oh, and IS + tripod is not always bad mojo. When shooting surfing I sometimes put my lens on a tripod and leave the ball head loose. I leave IS on and swing the camera around on the ball head and shoot. I get very good results doing that and a monopod setup should be similar.
