Patches of snow and ice down low along with very muddy conditions in the first mile. Snow and ice becoming greater with elevation up to about 2-3 inches along the ridge on top of a slushy layer. I was able to bareboot with poles with no problem but traction would have been appropriate. Frozen footprints made the descent a little tedious, wouldn't be hard to turn an ankle.
Windy and socked in so Waumbek was a good call for the day. On the descent I saw three deer within .5 of the car after a noise sounding like a arrow being shot got my attention in the right direction!! The season closed the previous day I think and I didn't see any hunters, but I don't know what else the sound could have been??
