Trails: Lincoln Woods, Black Pond, Black Pond Whack, Lincoln Brook, Owl's Head Slide, Franconia Falls.
Miles: ~18
Time: 9.5 hours
Conditions: Some muddy spots, no surprise. The BP bushwhack is very muddy in places. The two upper crossings of Lincoln Brook (about a half-mile before the spur to the Slide) are rock-hoppable.
No. of people seen on trails: None all the way to Owl's Head (we got started at 7:20 a.m.). On the return, 1 on old Owl's Head summit, 3 on Slide, 1 on Lincoln Brook Trail, about 10 from Franconia Falls back to Lincoln Woods.
Special equipment: Gaiters useful, especially on the whack. Poles or a walking staff helpful on stream crossings and the Slide.
Cell phone coverage: None (AT&T).
Comments: On the BP whack, we were fine from Black Pond to Lincoln Brook following a compass bearing of 355 degrees, hitting the Lincoln Brook Trail right where it crosses Lincoln Brook for the second time. On the return, we veered a little too far east, but no problem: We wound up on the fisherman's trail above Franconia Falls. For those of you who hike with dogs, my 10-month-old Plott hound puppy, Tuckerman, made this 18-mile hike without a problem. But boy, he's sleeping like a baby today!
