Interesting what trouble even experienced people get into. I wonder what this will do to their confidence level in future climbs? I was ill on a group hike here in the Whites and it took me a while to get my confidence back enough so that I was willing to hike with a group again.

There is an old saying about 4-wheel drive: The difference between 4-wheel and 2-wheel drive is that you just get farther in before you get stuck.

Pretty much the same applies to mountaineering: experienced mountaineers get into more difficult situations before calling for rescue. (Perhaps they don't call as often as the inexperienced and generally have better self-extraction skills).

It all has to do with the individual's capabilities relative to the difficulty of the situation. More capability <--> more difficult.
