Southern NH, Avatar: Durand Ridge above King Ravin
Date of Hike: Saturday 15 Dec 2007

Conditions: Snow & packed snow until after 1/2 point and Drainpipe, then mixed snow & ice. Crampons proved difficult in places due to thin ice cover, and bare rock (from line of hikers going up, obviously). But foot traction was generally useful and allowed for more sure-footed ascent/descent.

Unless crossing Pumpelly Trail to Cascade link, leave snowshoes behind. However, today's storm on Sun 16 Dec 2007, be advised, this may appreciably change trail conditions. Regardless, Poles -and- Crampons or stablicers are strongly advised.

Beautiful day: sunny, cold and some light wind. Beautiful ice/snow over everything above treeline. This was a training hike in preparation for upcoming hikes in the NH White Mtns, to work out the equipment/conditioning bugs.
