Date of Hike: January 1, 2010

Trail Conditions: Hard pack snow with an inch or two of fresh powder on top. Considerable drifts above tree line, with some light covering of hard ice in places.

Special Equipment Required: Bare boots are sufficient. Snow shoes and crampons are unnecessary. Micro spikes or stabilicers are useful on the steeper pitches and above tree line on the ice. Poles are very useful. Expect very occasional post holing near the top without snow shoes, but no where near enough to warrant bringing them.

Comments: 32F at the top and zero wind. Quite different than Jan 1, 2009 when it was -21F and the high peaks forecast was for 90-110mph winds. First one up and counted 50 folks on the way down, despite the very mild conditions. Counted 32 last year.
