Another "Donation" to the S&R Fund ? - Mt Madison Rescue

YES. And 'reckless' is a very measured and sensitive word to use for such a person.

Another "Donation" to the S&R Fund ? - Mt Madison Rescue

I'll second that. These 'news' reports of hiker misfortune, stupidness, bad luck, etc., are about as news worthy as reporting a flat tire along I93.

New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

S & R Funding I think it would be wise to have the funding broken out into its two components Search: If a true search is undertaken (seldom the case these days with all the tracking and comm devices) I believe the searchee should be billed 100% of the cost for such an effort. Rescue: Funded...

    AMC Closing Facilities for Irene

Tip of the hat to all authorities who obviously made the correct call in closing the WMNF and AMC facilities this past weekend. Just imagine if the storm remained category 1 or 2 for a few hours more on its trip north. I am anxious (yet, apprehensive) about hitting my adopted trail section...

    WMNF Closure!

Ummmm................with all due respect.....not quite. During the ice storm there was likely next to nobody on the WMNF except for a very few hikers. All huts, campgrounds, shelters pretty much empty except for a very few. Check out todays video (WMUR website) of the Pemi adjacent to Loon if...

Valley Way tentsite closed 8/8/10 to 8/12/10

Interesting. Native soil tent pads. At that elevation and the general topography of the site, I find that surprising. Possibly a way to make the site less inviting for campers? I've always preferred a platform for the drainage, and shelf-like characteristics for cooking, sitting, etc. Of course...

    Great Gully Trail

I catalog the Great Gully as an 'ascend' trail. Would prefer to descend elsewhere such as Spur. This is a very nice route, lightly used, with real alpine feel. Though not a dare-devil by any stretch...I found the crawl space short and not daunting at all.

New Hotel @ Mt. Washington Auto Road

Good for the Auto Road company. They seem to have a record of accomplishment with their business ventures. I wish them well and look forward to this new establishment. Perhaps a new place for Mr & Mrs Doug to stay and dine some day.

    "Cheeky hikers moon Cog"

This childish practice takes real guts up along the tracks where (up to now) nobody was around to stop it. Why don't some of the protesting 'environmentalists' take their mooning to the summit or base of the cog where the audience would be even bigger? I think we all know the answer to that!

Tibetan prayer flags on summits -- yay or nay?

    Worst "footing" in the Whites

Cousin of Link Must be something about 'Links' My vote is the final stretch of Pine Link between Watson Path & Madison Hut. This is smooth on the topo map too yet is agonizingly slow going over the infamous stones of the alpine zone.

Resuce - hiker flown off Mount Jefferson

I disagree that the trailhead elevation/accessibility has much if anything to do with recent SAR matters. First I doubt anyone would link this week's mishap with trailhead access. The poor guy tripped near the summit. Equating that to 'easy' access is a stretch at best. Also, does anyone think...

Resuce - hiker flown off Mount Jefferson

Yup.........and everyone who drinks (not in BSP, of course) is 21. Does anyone think the BSP staff would simply ignore a distress cell phone call from someone on the mountain?

Lost and now candidates for a reckless conduct fine from NH Fish & Game

The law, enacted in 1999, is used mainly against unequipped hikers who have to be rescued after ignoring warnings or who head out without proper preparation. The law provides for fines. ************************************ It sure doesn't sound like they ignored a warning. It doesn't sound like...
