    Conditions on Moosilauke?

Thanks David. I actually hiked the trail yesterday not knowing what to expect. While there was plenty of snow it was pretty well packed. I went without snowshoes and had the occasional posthole. As long as I stayed centered on the herd path the trail was bare bootable. It was a great day to...

    Conditions on Moosilauke?

Does anyone know what the current conditions are for the Gorge Brook Trail on Moosilauke? Are snowshoes necessary or is trail pretty well packed? I'm also curious about the status of Ravine Lodge Rd. Any info would be appreciated.

    Presidentials in late May?

Thanks for the responses. I'll keep an eye on the weather for the next few weeks and gear up accordingly. This will be my first extended trip of the year and I can't wait to get out there.

    Presidentials in late May?

I'm planning on backpacking the Presidential and Carter Ranges in late May. I've never been in this section of the Whites and I know the weather can still be very winter-like at this time. How were these areas of the Whites affected this winter? Does anyone have any advice as far as gear...

gray jays in the Whites: seasonal?

I'm new here and I haven't had a chance to beat this dead horse...so here goes. I don't think they should be fed ever. They are wild animals and can find food on their own. If they find people food I don't care but I don't think people should feed them. I don't know anything about gut...

    Owl's Head from the North?

I stayed at 13 Falls in early Sept and the caretaker told us there is an old logging road or path of some kind up the North side of OH. We were sitting by the falls and he was pointing out some zig zag lines that he said was some old road. He encouraged us to hike it and said it was an easy...

    Willey Range Hike

I plan on hiking the Willey Range soon. Can anyone recommend which way to ascend/descend? We will have two cars so no need to back track. Should we head up the Kendron/Ethan Pond trail and head north? Or ascend the Avalon/A-Z and go south? I'd much rather climb the steeper ascent.

    Flume Slide

I did the same hike about 5 or 6 weeks ago. The hike in to the Flume Slide Trail is very easy. The begining of the hike was pretty flat with lots of roots. After you hit the bike path and cross the bridge, the terrain changes to less roots and some rocks. We found the approach to the base of...

    Theory on "levels" of peakbagging

clg898, We have thought of all the people up there. Others have told us that it's just too crowded and anticlimactic up there. But what a better way to trump all of the distractions than completing the 48's? It only seems fitting to hit the highest peak last. I do understand what you're...

    Theory on "levels" of peakbagging

My first 4000fter was on 6/25 of this year (Cannon). On 6/26 we did Lincoln and Lafayette. Later that evening a friend told me about the 48 4000fter list. That was all I needed to hear. I've been on a mission ever since. We agreed to hike all 48 together. At this point right now we have...

    Raingear

I too have the Precip jacket and pants. I've had the jacket for about 4 years. Last year the inner membrane started to wear out. If I hold my jacket up to the light I can see many weak spots near the base of the hood and some up higher on the hood. I repaired these spots with some nylon...

    Which down jacket to buy?

I really appreciate all the responses. Please keep them coming. I'd like to be as educated as possible before purchasing winter gear. I have no intention of wearing this jacket while actively hiking or snowshoeing. I am really planning for my winter backpacking trips (multi day) and...

    Which down jacket to buy?

Being able to where it around town doesn't have to be an option. I'd just like to get a lot of miles/uses out of whatever I purchase. I really haven't looked into synth fills because I prefer the benefits of down. However since I want to make a good purchase I will explore my options...

    Which down jacket to buy?

Wow! Thanks for all the speedy responses. I guess I'll take much closer look at the FF. Any opinions of the type of water repellent? Epic, Pertex or eVENT? I plan on having my rain shell handy so the eVENT might be a little bit of overkill. I plan on getting out and snowshoeing for the...
