What was Marlin Perkin's sidekick's name?

My favorite episode was when Marlin set Jim in a blind made of sticks on the altiplano in the Andes. Jim's got a dead rabbit in his hand, stuck through the top of the blind, and a condor takes the bait. There's Jim fighting for his life against a pissed-off condor with a 20 foot wingspan, and...

Easily accessible, must-see destination in the Adirondacks

I'd also recommend Brothers and Big Slide, with views of the Great Range coming early and often, and the option of a loop down to John's Brook and back.

Sounds you love in the woods

One of my favorite moments of all time (and my son's): We were climbing Gothics when he was 8 on a perfectly still morning. I stopped him on the Orebed Brook Trail and told him to listen very carefully and tell me what he heard. After about 10 seconds he got frustrated and said: "Dad, I...

Next generation of Adirondack hikers: Peak Weekend

ooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh... This explains why the trailheads were gridlocked. But I actually spontaneously commented to my hiking partner that it was good to see so many younger hikers out on the trails, rather than sitting in front of video games.

    Alternative to Fleece Jacket?

Here's a third vote for the DriClime windshirt - the single most versatile piece of clothing I own. Combined with a lightweight polypro base layer and a fleece vest the three pieces are still lighter than a fleece jacket and can be worn in any combination.

    High Peaks conditions in mid-April

If you have any possibility of spotting a car, doing the trip from Upper Works to the Loj is a great option.

Keeping snacks & gadgets handy & warm on winter hikes.

I just keep things in inside pockets as much as possible. The camera is the biggest problem because I want it quickly accessible and there's also the problem of condensation as you heat up. I usually hang it around my neck inside my outer layer and hope for the best.

    Hip replacement surgery

A guy I work with just had it done - he's about 50 and extremely active: rock climbing, hiking, kayaking, biking, etc., at least until the hip got so bad he couldn't do the things he loved. Saw him the other day and he says it feels better than it has in years, and the doctor has told him...

closest tent site to Marcy summit ?

I did, and it was spectacular to wake up in the morning and see Marcy's summit as the first thing lit up when the sun came up... :D One of many fond memories from back in the day... And I still think the designated campsite at Sno-Bird is the closest "legal" campsite to Marcy's summit...

Effects of high altitude on brain cells

I've been to almost 21,000 feet, but I'm pretty sure my brain cell issues are related to alcohol and substance abuse...

    Charles Houston - obit

He literally "wrote the book" on high altitude effects on the human body - and he didn't do all his research in a lab. A real-life legend...

    Colorado 2009: 58 fourteeners in 58 days

Awesome! I mean that in the literal sense - I'm in awe. Crestone Needle is a great choice to finish on, too. :D
