    Seymour -- 2/19/11

Drove to the Winter parking lot. Hiked in to Ward Brook Leanto -- narrow packed down trail all the way. The split in the trail going towards Caulkins Brook and S,D,E had one set of snowshoe impressions with a lot of snow on top. At Ward Brook Leanto stream we headed up along the stream...

    Cabot -- 3/14/10

Went up from York Pond in rain/slush/snow conditions. Wore snowshoes the whole way as we were barebooting deep within yards of the parking lot. Snow was very slushly. Trail is hard to follow on the higher elevations due to wind gusts and falling snow erasing tracks. About an inch of snow fell...

    Jackson - 1/18/10

Trail well broken in all the way to the top. Barebooted the whole way.

    Isolation - 1/17/10

Trail well broken in, able to bareboot the whole way. There were three intersections where it wasn't clear which was the trail and which was the bushwhacks. At the first we stayed to the right (there was a carved "T" in a tree here). After ascending a ridge we came to another intersection. This...

What day were you thinking of hiking Carrigain? I'm coming up to hike on 12/30 and 12/31 and was considering Carrigain. Want some company? I've got 13 left for my 115.

NYT/Grand Canyon Hike in Winter story

Agreed. I hiked it in 2002 from 12/27 to 12/30 with New Years spent in Vegas. At the rim there was snow and ice (we brought crampons but didn't need them), but soon we were hiking in T-shirts. We camped at night where it got down to 30-degrees. Great time, worth doing again... and again.

I'm thinking of heading up there this Friday with plans to hike Sat and Sun. I've got 14 left to go to complete my 115 and 9 of them are in NH. My tentative plan was to do the Osceolas on Saturday and Carrigan on Sunday. Any interest? If not, I'm definitely looking to get back up there a few...

    New Hampshire Hostels

Anyone know the status of Lyons Hospitality? Is the hostel still open? If so rates and contact info? If not, where are the good hostels these days to get some rest, warmth and a shower after in between full days of snowshoeing this winter?

Mt. Abraham (ME) trail AKA Fire Warden's Trail

I'm looking to take this trail up Abraham later this month. Does anyone have any updates on the condition of the road or anything else that I should know. I drive a sedan and tore up the front plastic underbelly on the Caribou Pond Road on the way to Reddington on Monday. I'm just wondering if I...

    Info For Rangeley,me

I just got back from three days in the area and the bugs are tolerable. There were a few mosquitoes near the water at the end of the Firewarden's Trail by the Bigelows, and gnats were annoying on Sugarloaf but other than these two instances bugs were not a problem. I'd go with a bugnet and...

    The Rankins Visit Rankin Pond

Hey Tom, Congratulations again on your wedding!! I'm the guy you met at Cheney Pond. It dawned on my after you left that I had read about your pending wedding plans in the thread about the Jackrabbit burning. Glad you had a good time at Rankin Pond. There's not much to see there, but because...

    4days in Adirondacks, 17-4K's?

Take heed not to miss up your chance to summit Gray. It's the trailless peak right below Marcy and opposite Skylight. It's on the "lists" and would be a shame to pass over if you're all the way out there.

    Sewards herd path info, please

Definitely take Calkins Brook up -- its a walk in the park. It's hard not to miss as there is a pile of rocks where it starts. The herd path up Seward is in pretty bad shape.

    Adirondack Canoeing

I took my Scout troop on the trip you suggested in 2000 and had a great time. We've also been on the Allagash in Maine and in Algonquin Park in Ontario so can help you with those as well. As for the ADK: We started in Blue MT Lake renting canoes and meeting the outfitters there. We then canoed...
