    Presidential Traverse: Sunday March 1

I did the Baldface Circle on March 13. High winds were in the forecast for the presidential range but the weather was perfect on Baldface. It looks like I will wait until next winter to do more peakbagging and possibly a traverse.

    Presidential Traverse: Sunday March 1

Chris, I am glad you had a great day on the Presidentials! I read your trip report and the pictures were great. I hiked Liberty and Flume with a friend and we could see all the way to the Presidential Range. I hope to grab another opportunity possibly next weekend if the weather works out.

    Presidential Traverse: Sunday March 1

It looks like I am going to postpone a presidential traverse for another better weather window. Instead I am going to hike liberty and found with a couple of friends. Enjoy the great trail conditions!

    Presidential Traverse: Sunday March 1

I am watching the weather forecast for Sunday, March 1 closely and considering doing a presidential traverse. If I do, I would plan to start at Valley Way around 3am, with the hope to reach Crawford Notch by 6pm. I am looking for a partner to spot a car at Crawford notch with. Once I get...

Osceola: North Slide bushwhack- Sep 25

I had looked several times at the north slide of Osceola from the Kancamangus Hwy. It has been very dry the last few weeks and is a good time to attempt the Osceola slide. I would like to attempt this bushwhack/slide climb on Friday, September 25, but not alone. The itinerary would be to...

Bigelows via Safford Brook Trail 7-20-08

My wife and I camped at the campsites near the Safford Brook Trailhead. The mosquitos and bugs near the lake were about as aggressive as I have ever seen. The Safford Brook Trail is fairly easy and in great shape. The first portion of it has many biting bugs along it. One we got to a...

    Crampons in mixed terrain?

Stabilicers vs Yak Trax Thank you for all the advice and comments on this subject. For those of you who have recommended Yak Trax or stabilicers, what is the difference between them and which is better for you and why?

    Crampons in mixed terrain?

Around this time of the year, the lower parts of many trails are mostly, but not fully melted out. It would be nice if the snow and ice stopped at exactly one place and then I would take my crampons off at that spot. Unfortunately, it does not work that way. Trails often have snowy, icy areas...

    Hike and ski Wildcats?

ski area rules concerning hiking It is interesting to know that it is apparently okay to hike along the ski trail at Wildcat Mountain. Cannon Mountain does not allow people to hike along the side fo their trails. I got lectured about doing that last weekend. I guess each ski area has its own...

    Easiest Hike that you thought.....

Most any peak with maintained trails Almost every hike in the White Mtns has been easier than expected. I guess all those rugged trailless peaks in the Adirondacks toughened me to the point that any peak with a maintained trail is easier than expected. Hey, I WANT to find a peak here in New...

    Your Terminal List

Other lists I have little doubt that I will eventually finish the 4000-footers, but I am learning to focus on more details, like identifying trees, plants, and watch for wildlife. I have little desire to pursue bushwhacking any hundred highest lists, however, I would consider the 50...

4,000-footers with minimum 300 foot cols

Mark, Thanks for posting the link to the ADK prominence list. I agree that based on comparing lists that NH does beat NY on Mtns with 300-ft cols after all. Having hiked both places, I enjoy both and like getting outdoors period.

4,000-footers with minimum 300 foot cols

Dr. Wu, thanks for that link. It is very useful. Based on my analysis of that list, using the 300-foot col rule would disqualify approximately 16 of the New Hampshire peaks, sooooo, if you compare apples to apples, the Adirondacks 42 4000-footers beats out NH's 32 4000-footers with at least...

4,000-footers with minimum 300 foot cols

It is my understanding that in NY's Adirondacks that a 300-foot col is the minimum for a peak to be considered separate by 46er standards. Of course, of the 46, only 42 are truly 4,000-footers. It is also my understanding that the minimum col in New Hampshire is only 200 feet for the AMC...
