    Waterbury Trail (6/26)

Trail in great shape. A couple of muddy spots but it had rained in the morning so not sure about those. Of course it was starting to rain when I left too so. I heard from people at the summit that the trail to White Rocks was rather grown-in, but I didn't venture there myself so I don't know...

    Sugarloaf Trail (5/23)

The ones in Twin Mountain. A little muddy near the river. A fairly fresh looking rockslide near the North summit. Other than that, no issues but swarms of black flies.

    Georgiana Falls (5/22)

One blowdown of note. But a guided tour was there including elderly folks wearing sandals so the trail is in pretty good shape obviously.

    Coppermine Trail (5/22)

Couple of muddy spots and a couple of blowdowns that have wellworn paths around them. Other than that no problems. Water was running a little high and so it is a little adventurous to get to the upper pool on Bridal Veil Falls.

    Mt Stinson Trail (4/24)

Trail is mostly dry with numerous muddy spots. Brook crossings are no problem. Took the hiking trail up at the loop junction and descended on the snowmobile trail back to that junction. Snowmobile trail has a couple sections that are soggy messes. Wouldn't recommend it right now.

    Rattlesnake in Rumney (4/24)

Trail is mostly dry with a few muddy spots. Saw 2 garter snakes but no rattlesnakes.

    New England Picture Quiz

We haven't had a photo quiz in a while. These are all in New England. Good Luck. Easy one. Where is this sign? Another easy one. What is this body of water? A little harder. What is the name of the mountain? A little harder. What trail is this? A little harder. Where are these...

Mt Adams 50th Anniversary (of sorts)

I had an interesting conversation with a couple from England yesterday afternoon in the Appalachia parking lot. I hope it's not going to lead to SAR tomorrow. We were waiting for friends to return from Mt Madison when they pulled into the lot and got out and started wandering around. They...

    Moosilauke via Glencliff

Barebootable for the first mile or so. Snowshoes after that. Our tracks were filled in on the way back from the snow showers. Our tracks above treeline were obliterated almost as soon as we made them. Whiteout at the top.

    Wildcat Traverse (2/20)

Barebootable to Carter Notch, but a lot of icy spots so be careful. Wore snowshoes the rest of the way, but may not have needed them everywhere.

Kinsmans via Mt Kinsman Tr. 12-26

Pretty much a hard surface to North Kinsmans - we wore light traction. Between summits it's looser - light traction or snow shoes

What's up with the dam on Lonesome Lake?

I noticed last weekend that the dam on Lonesome Lake is getting worked on. As you come up the trail and hit the lake there are signs directing you around the long way to get to the hut. Not that it's that much further going around the lake (I wasn't going to the hut so it didn't matter to me...

    Blue Ridge via Canty Trail

Lower part of the trail is a bit muddy and the bog bridges are a little slippery. Mosquitos are very thick the first mile or so. Just a little after the cascade there is water running in the trail for a few minutes. Other than that, trail was in fine shape.

    Goodrich Rock ladder = broken

The ladder up to Goodrich Rock (side trail off the Greely Ponds trail) is broken. Two rungs came off in my hands while climbing it and the left upright rotted thru and broke in half. Needless to say I didn't make it up to the top. I would not recommend climbing it.

    Mt Crescent Trail (12/13/08)

Trail Conditions crusty, with some icy spots and some open brooks. Equipment Required We used snowshoes the whole way. It's still slippery and not well packed. There were branches down in the path. There are a lot less now. I moved most anything that wasn't frozen down. There are a few...

East Baldpate (8/28/08) #100 in New England

East Baldpate (8/23/08) #100 in New England Baldpate. I'd been here before. On November 12, 2005 to be exact. Amicus, Alpinista, AMSTony and I made an attempt on that day. Stymied by an abundance of fresh blowdowns, deep snowdrifts in the col, and ice on the ledges of East Baldpate, all...

    Mt Independence for Independence Day

It is such a seemingly insignificant little lump of land next to a narrow part of Lake Champlain, standing a mere 306 feet above sea level. Hardly a mountain at all. However, its small stature and unassuming nature belies its great importance in the struggle for American Independence. Fort...

    The Pemi Locomotive

I've heard rumors of a locomotive lurking somewhere in the depths of the Pemi Wilderness. But no one really will say whether it exists or not. I guess it's one of those secrets, like the 3k list. Well, it has been the object of my curiousity for some time now. Instead of just blindly...

    Cross Country road trip.

National Parks, State Highpoints, and other random things. a 3 week adventure from NH to CA and then back by a totally different route. A ridiculous amount of pictures. And I didn't even start until Day 4 and didn't take any pictures the last 4 or 5 days either.

    newest New England Hundred Highest

Newly Discovered New England Hundred Highest Peak Some of you won’t like this. Others of you will. Let me explain. One of my college roommates, Joe, was a double major in civil engineering and geology. He worked for a few years for the USGS after he got his PhD, got sick of the research...
