    somethin' fishy about this story

A family of sixteen on an island? I know that island; that's tight quarters!

The Taxman Cometh for the AMC?

I'm very glad to see this issue getting some attention (and some good, civilized discussion as well). As I was reading an earlier post about the educational programs at the HC, I couldn't help but think that if I owned a hotel in Twin Mt., I'd periodically invite and advertise a speaker, then...

USFS Gale River Loop Road is Open

Great to hear the road is open, but PJack, NOTHING up here is dry! :D

    50 mile hike recommendations?

Just curious: are you looking for a loop hike?

    Cabot Trail story?

This is my understanding as well, though I haven't researched it myself. But for me, the point is that regardless of whether there's a legal easement, the landowner is no longer comfortable for whatever reason with the trail crossing his land. Whether it's a legitimate reason (e.g. people...

    Cabot Trail story?

Actually, if memory serves and as another poster implied, the problem was the he WANTED a snowmobile trail on the land. I think he believed that the USFS had promised him one, and never carried through. Thus the closure. I think I recall reading that someone had done some deed research and...

    Hiking with Baby

I would start using the pack more, just to get him used to it. Put him in it while you grocery shop (you can always put him in the cart if he starts voicing his opinion too loudly ;) ). Use it for walks, etc. Always talk about it positively, too. Kids DO pick up on stuff like that.

    Moose behavior question

Thanks, stopher. That's what I was wondering. I surely didn't go looking for the mother, so I can't say with any certainty that she wasn't there, but she certainly wasn't right beside her calf unless she was prone. When I got home, my husband said he didn't think the cow would leave her calf...

    Moose behavior question

Not to worry -- I didn't hang around or attempt to approach it. I know better than that. I stopped for about five or ten seconds or so (more to pick my jaw up from off the ground than anything else!), then stayed on the road. It was off in the woods, probably 50-75' from me. It was standing...

    Moose behavior question

While on a walk on a forest road in Easton today, I saw the TINIEST moose I have ever seen, and can only surmise that it was a newborn -- it didn't look anywhere near the size of a yearling -- MUCH smaller even than the half-yearling calves one sees with their moms during the fall. So first...

XC Skiing on Cathedral Ledge road?

Thanks. We don't mind steep; we sort of figure that if cars can do it, we can ski it. Since we're coming from further north, we'll be headed through Bartlett, but we'll check out Nanomocomucuck if we don't have any success off of 302. How much snow do you have your way? We're a bit north of...

XC Skiing on Cathedral Ledge road?

Can you ski on this road in winter? If so, is there enough snow to do so? We're heading over to North Conway for lack of anything else to do tomorrow, and thought we'd try to ski somewhere (preferably free...) while we're there. Thanks!

Asking recommendation for 45% slope trail (more details inside)

Ack! Shame on me is right! I had a vision of some poor 6yo kid careening down Huntington. Glad I can push that picture out of my head. I'm not familiar enough with Grafton Notch to be much help. If you're back in the Franconia area, the Mt. Kinsman trail might be worth considering; it's not...

Asking recommendation for 45% slope trail (more details inside)

45%?!?!? Neither Lonesome Lake nor Crawford path are anywhere near 45%!

Bad news from the Cog railway

The article refers to the Auto Road (Pinkham side), not the Cog RR (Crawford side). I would guess it would only apply if the Cog was granted similarly.

Bad news from the Cog railway

Understood; you would certainly have to be aware of the forecast, and I surely wasn't suggesting an overnight. But people park all of the time on the side of the Easton Road (Rte 116) near the Reel Brook Rd and near the Kinsman Trail in the winter. That's a State road, too. Sometimes it's...

Bad news from the Cog railway

I think that Forestnome has a point. This is a STATE road, which is why our taxes are paying for the STATE to plow it. Though I can see why they would prohibit cars from parking along the road in the places where the snowmobile trail runs alongside, I believe that from the Jefferson Notch road...

AMC -vs- the snowmobiles (Union Leader article)

I think the more interesting question is how the Cog/MWH people managed to get the DOT to plow the Cog road. Haven't they been trying to get the State to do this for years??? Rumors flying around the notches are that the order came from Craig himself, and completely bypassed DOT. Rumors are...
