    Jupiter/Venus conjunction

If you're camping out, or even if you're home and have to set the alarm, this will be worth seeing. The viewing conditions should be good. Half a degree of separation is really close. If conditions are excellent Mars (near the horizon) and Mercury should also be visible. Space Weather News...

Wolfjaws and "Clueless from Quebec" - February 25-27, 2011

I'm from Hudson, NY. If you had called this report "Clueless from Hudson," I would have been so mad at the ignorance of these two hikers I would have said, "Who are these idiots?" Not taken offense, at all. I am rather surprised at the reactions this trip report is receiving. Sounds like a...

Double flyover ISS and Discovery tonight

Starting at 7:23 pm here in the mid-Hudson Valley. Rising in the WNW with an altitude of 33 degrees, will traverse to the S. This is rare, so hopefully conditions will be good. There will also be two flyovers tomorrow evening, the first at 6:14 pm.

Coldfeet Fun in the Wintertime: Best Lil Sno Haus in Connecticut

Is that stove made out of a cookie tin? Nice blaze, and I see you even put a rock under it to protect the shelter's sill.

    Florida paddling suggestions?

I loved camping in Flamingo and doing day trips from there. There are overnight/camping options too. Flamingo was a lot less built-up than I'd expected, due to the devastating hurricanes five years ago. You drive 40 miles through Everglades NP and there you are, the road ends in Flamingo. The...

Total lunar eclipse "on" the winter solstice

Last night was a bust for Geminids; it was snowing. Tonight looks better but holy cats it is windy and cold.

Almost The Last Trip Of North Country Paddling Season

Yes, that's a huge bay in the area of the lighthouse and the Mills Mansion. I have been looking at the Hudson lately, still thinking about one more trip, but it has been very windy this past week.

    Hudson Webcam North Germantown

Foggy today; can't see much. This would be good for checking out current conditions - choppy, smooth, etc. if you were planning to launch from there.

350 foot bridge transported on Hudson River

http://www.thedailymail.org/articles/2010/07/14/news/doc4c3d4a377bd2b038558675.txt This photo in the Daily Mail was much better than the ones I took. It was a dark morning. Woke up to rain on the tent and the chug-chug-chug of tug engines and knew the bridge was coming, since shipping traffic...

350 foot bridge transported on Hudson River

http://www.thedailymail.org/articles/2010/07/10/news/doc4c38079d7eb50819175404.txt This is going to be great. A new 350 foot bridge is going to be transported from Coeymans, just south of Albany, to NJ on Tuesday. They are using two barges and this thing is so big that it is going to restrict...

A different kind of Catskill "peak" experience..

Nice report, Jay. I can see the river from my house...on Saturday it was gray and rough. When people ask me about paddling on the river, I often say that paddling against the tide isn't really that hard at all. It's the wind that makes things difficult.

    AT: Guilder Pond to Race

Did trail maintenance Sunday, an Easter tradition. The trail is clear and dry, only the usual wet spots. The snow is gone. Met a section hiker from Virginia, an overnight backpacker and many day hikers. All reported conditions on the AT further down the Riga Plateau to be "excellent." FYI...
