Long trail from Abraham to Ellen 10-24-10

Mt Abraham to Mt Ellen had anywhere from bare rock (very little) to over a foot of snow. Ran it in regular trail running shoes but micro-spikes would have been useful especially on the descents. Very little ice, mostly firm packed snow.

    Smarts Mountain - 12/13/09

Just a couple of minor blow-downs. Nothing that couldn't be managed. Ranger seemed a little worse, but again just a couple of downed trees.

    Smarts Mountain - 12/13/09

I'm working my way through the New Hampshire fire tower list. This was #22. I headed out at 4am for the 2+ hour drive to Lyme. The temp in Hanover was 9 degrees when I rolled through. The drive took a little less time than expected so I headed out for a three mile road run as the sky slowly...

Smarts Mountain - Up Lambert ridge tr & down Ranger tr

12-13-09 Trail Conditions: Mix of powder and hard packed snow. Lambert was post-holed heavily in deeper snow. Ranger was unbroken prior to my descent. Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes - essential Comments: The final section where the two trails meet was pretty well packed. Your name...

West and Crum - Mass COHP's

My "normal clothes" are running clothes :) I love studying maps and figuring out unusual things I can see in a town (cellar holes in the former town of Dana) or abandoned railbeds (and even some that have been converted to trails) or stupid stuff (like finding the high point in the town of...

West and Crum - Mass COHP's

Hampshire County High Point – West Mountain 2,106’ I met Albee at the first turnout on Plainfield Pond and we set out at 8:00 AM on a bright but very cold late fall morning. The forest was very open and the few blow-downs were easy to avoid. We quickly passed the forest boundary which...

Belknap Traverse – 12+ peaks in one day

I’ve wanted to do this run/hike since reading about the Belknap range on Peakbagger.com The first mountain I ever climbed was Mt Major as a 13 year old Boy Scout over 30 years ago. Conditions were very good, with temperatures hovering around freezing at 8 AM. Here are the peaks we did… ROWE...

19 miles in the Sandwich range - 10-20-07

Take out breaks, meetings, and such and I bet 2 hours a day is about right. :)

    Kelsey & Dixville – 10-21-07

Albee, Cory and I drove to Gorham after hiking on Saturday. We found a reasonably inexpensive motel and crashed for the night. I slept restlessly and woke the other by screaming when, around midnight, a gust of wind blew the door open. In my half awake state I thought someone had broken into...

    My first solo 4,000'

Yeah, there is a bonus that you don't have to run all decisions by the "committee". I've done a ton of trail running (and some smaller mountains) on my own, but I'm definitely new to bigger peaks alone. When I'm with the group I tend to hang out in the back and just go with the flow. It is a...

    Wapack Trail End-to-End (N-S), 10/20/2007

Great report. Sounds like a blast. Just goes to prove you don't need to go above 4,000' or above tree-line to get some great views and an awesome hike.

Table Rock and Dixville Peak - 18-Oct-07

Hey Albee, I think you mean we took a side trip to Table Rock. There is no way you could get me to go "over" Table rock. :)

    My first solo 4,000'

Thus far all of my hikes/runs on the higher peaks have been with small groups. I decided to finish off a week of vacation with my first solo. I chose Mt Tecumseh because it looked like an interesting hike and the bonus was that I could finish at the base of the ski area and include a run back...

A quick stop at The Pinnacle

The Pinnacle I was looking for some place interesting to run in Hooksett or Bow as I was headed that way for an Orienteering meet. I was intrigued when I first read about the Pinnacle in Thoreau’s “A week on the Concord and Merrimack rivers”, wondering if the spot still existed. I was...

    Whacking the Captain then Carrigain

I think Albee's love of loops comes from his running background. A lot of runners despise out & back running. I love out/back's because once you've gone out you're on familiar territory the rest of the way. Along with all of the hiking lists, I'm trying to run in every town in Mass (I've got...

Willey, Field, Tom, West Field, and Whitewall (not Whitehall) – 09/01

The weekend gave me 23 of the 48. I enjoy the time in the woods, Albee is a great hiking partner he is unfazed by the thickest of woods. My background in Orienteering has given me a love for bushwhacking. If I wasn't racing every weekend I'd be hiking :)

Lost compass - Gore Mountain (4 NH3K peaks)

You are one tough guy, that is a ton of whacking in one long weekend. I highly reccomend an orienteering thumb compass. You never have to put it away and can still use your hands.
