    EMS parent firm declaring Bankrupcy

Yes, Boston is the Comm Ave store. The one on Boylston closed a few years ago (2014ish) and Harvard Square/Cambridge closed last year. Nashua actually was no longer in the mall - they had moved across the street to the former Borders location a few years back, so it's not really pulling out of...

    EMS parent firm declaring Bankrupcy

And, hey, in case anyone really cares, they've entered into an agreement with a UK firm, Sports Direct Ltd to purchase them in some form. Looking at the latest in the court documents, it appears that Sports Direct only wants to take on about half the stores. They went into bankruptcy with a...

    Baby Formula As Trail Food

Babies need fat for development, especially in the first year when they essentially have a liquid diet, so the formula, in both liquid and powder form is essentially the equivalent of whole milk with a whole bunch of other stuff tossed in that the scientists think they need for good measure...

Cost of hiking on Franconia Ridge - fail

The charge was $9300. I'm wondering how much the guy has paid out in lawyer fees, "expert" fees and travel costs from Michigan to NH already just to dispute it. Same goes for F&G. Have they paid out more in fees than they will eventually get returned once the various appeals have been settled.

GMC Hiking with Dog Video Series

Steve and I happened to be out hiking Spruce Mountain in Vermont on one of the days they were filming part of this series last year. We make a very brief cameo appearance in Part 1 just past the 4 minute mark for about 10 seconds.

Fast Pass High Speed Lane Open at I-93 Tollbooth

They work pretty much up and down the east coast - we've gone from NH to North Carolina and paid all tolls through EZ Pass, including NJ, PA and DE. We've also gone as far west as Illinois and been able to use them (helpful in the mess known as Chicago).

Versa Capital - new owners of EMS lays off 110, restructure company

Yes, this is absolutely still happening. The old Nashua store will be closed for a few days towards the end of next week while they move the inventory, fixtures, registers, etc across the street and set up the new store with additional space, inventory, etc. They will have the entire top floor...

    Plus size women's winter gear?

I am, um, on the larger side and I've bought quite a bit of gear from LL Bean - as previously mentioned, their gear tends to run larger than most other places. I've typically found that I can fit into one size smaller in LL Bean versions of things than I can in most other places. That's a nice...

Versa Capital - new owners of EMS lays off 110, restructure company

Read the press release again (or go to one of the many other copies that are now out there on the internet.....product design isn't going anywhere. It says specifically in the press release that Product Design as well as a few other areas/departments are remaining in Peterborough. The EMS brand...

No longer charging for some trailhead parking.

The Osceola Trailhead on Tripoli Road also had the pay station blocked off last weekend (big sign covering the drop slot saying "no fee". Interestingly, there were also two porta potties at the trailhead, which I don't recall being there before.

    Blueberry Mountain Trail (Benton) Closed

Wow. That kind of sucks. That's a beautiful hike and an interesting view of Moosilauke. Good hike to go on with kids. Not too rocky, rooty or steep. Heck, even balanced challenged me managed to do it in just under book time. I'll miss having that trail open.

    Are poles worth it?

I have balance issues, so I use them all the time. When I started hiking, I had them but they stayed collapsed in my pack most of the time. But, once I was finally convinced to try them, I use them all the time now. They're great for balance, especially water crossings, bog bridges. They can...

What (or who) got you hiking?

Well, I was 33 and there was this guy..... First hike, he takes me up Welch-Dickey and we get rained and hailed on going across the Dickey ledges. Second hike (the next day), he tells me that it's only a mile or so to get up to the summit of Mount Major. Turns out it's 1.75 miles each way...

Less Rocky Trails in the Whites

As someone who is balance challenged due to a medical issue (I've only got one functioning balance nerve instead of the usual two that most people have), rocky trails definitely provide a challenge to me. That being said, I was just on the Moosilauke Carriage Road this weekend. It's like a tale...

    Crotched Mountain hiking trails closed?

I've hiked in from the trailhead on Route 136 and doing the loop using the Link Trail, Summit East Trail and Summit West Trail a couple of times now. Nice little loop. Around 3 miles and change. I don't remember the exact distance, but I've got it written down at home. Beautiful views in the...

    AT in Baxter

Just got back from Baxter myself. I was reading one of our Guide Books while in the park (not the AMC Maine Mountain Guide by the way) and they said that the relocation of the AT to the Grassy Pond Trail occurred sometime in (probably late) 2009 and was done specifically to eliminate that walk...
