    Cranberry Lake 50 trails update

It was 50hrs. I wasn't trying to go fast. It was a normal trip, breaks, camp, etc... No night hiking, I was in camp at 5ish the first day, and 3ish the second. I just happened to notice the time of 50hrs as I was approaching the terminus.

    Backpacks redux (a.k.a. "Busted!")

Bingo on both counts. My wife says nothing about my backpacking gear since she has at least 10x what I have in her cycling gear.

    Why do you get tired?

I remember reading something a while back about this. The conclusion was that there isn't a definitive explanation as to what causes fatigue. The other problem was in defining it. You specifically mentioned muscle fatigue, but fatigue can be for a variety of other reasons inclusing but not...

    stove with good track record

I use alcohol stoves exclusively even in the dead of winter. If I had to choose only one design for all my use , it would be the Fancee Feest stove made by zelph at bplite.com. It is the most versatile and works great even in sub-zero weather. No muss no fuss all the time. Note: this is a...

    White gas stoves

I disagree. SOME alcohol stoves, perhaps MOST even. But not ALL. I use an alcohol stove exclusively in all seasons. I would not call its efficiency nor time marginal. In fact it was superior to a whisperlight 2 weekends ago. It all depends on the design of the stove. My favorite is the Starlyte...

anyone ever ACTUALLY use a magnesium fire starter ?

I do not think you need large shavings. In fact the smaller ones will take a spark easier. You don't need much as magnesium burns very hot, just enough to get other tinder going. A small wad of 0000 steel wool will also take a spark easily (light from a fire steel), but that chunk of magnesium...
