    Trail Conditions Abuse - Warning

I am glad to hear that the trail conditions are being moderated. I haven't been to this site in a bit, and popped in to check on trail conditions. I found it very disappointing to have to rummage through personal drama to get the information I needed. I am not sure if this a new phenomena or has...

    Rail Ruins in the Catskills?

Does anyone know of any old tracks not in use, or the like in the Catskill vicinity (Ulster, Sullivan, Greene, Deleware, heck- anywhere in the Hudson Valley) that has been overtaken by nature? I know of many rail trails, but they don't have the rail, as well as still fuctioning rails, but that's...

    summit etiquette?

O this thread has some gems! on topic tho, I had a similar incident on a tower on one of the peaks in the Catskills. We made our hike up there only to find a couple at the top tier "thoroughly enjoying" the view. We waited, we stared, we made noises, we made comments, but they refused to come...

    How fast do you hike?

I hike slow, mainly because I figure- what's the rush? I'm out there to enjoy the outdoors, relax, take in nice views, stop and take lots and lots of pictures. Covering miles and miles of ground and several summits is not my priority. Going up I am definitely faster than down, mainly because I...

    Short Catskills DayHike?

Based on past experiences, I would be almost sure that there is still plenty of ice and snow around hunter now. You can check the trail reports to see. I was in the Shawangunks last weekend and even there were some sporadic icey spots. I'm still trying to plan my hike out for tomorrow. Good...

    Exercise programs...

Jogging as often and as long as my schedule permits. Yoga to keep me limber. The yoga has really helped alot as I am prone to all sorts of joint and back problems. I am way more pain (and complaint) free now. I also dance a lot, so I guess that helps as well.

    Excercise Poll...

It's really a domino effect. I love to hike. To be in shape for hiking I jog 10-20 miles/wk. To prevent injury from the jogging (I have awful joints) and tone other parts of my body for the hiking I practice yoga as often as possible, which amounts to I guess 3-4 times a week. It varies...

    Catskills in spring

I too have encountered snow (albeit packed) at Catskill Summits in late May, even after a week of over 80 degree weather. Even the Shawangunks can house snow as late as the end of April. I will be in the vicinity this weekend (hopefully) and I will report any snow I find.

    Slide and hunter

Two other books to add to the fine list already listed are The Catskill Trails: A Ranger's Guide to the High Peaks Book One (Northern Catskills) and Book two (Central Catskills) by Edward G Henry. Pro: The books provide historical and geographical tidbits about the hikes. Con: He only provides...
