    Water for Wounds

Hydrogen peroxide and iodine can cause minor tissue destruction, and isn't the first choice in most wound care applications, but they do have their place. Soap and water to thoroughly wash out the wound is the most recommended method, and one of the easiest and cheapest. In practice, most...

    New Outback

Here's a link about the Yakima Landing Pad on the Outback. Others have also posted on Subaru forums that it has worked great, with better spacing between the bars and the ability to carry more objects more conveniently...

    New Outback

The 2010-2011 car rack was definitely a disappointment, but Yakima came out with an adapter earlier this year that seems to be working great for folks. It's great for Yakima owners, but Thule folks are still struggling for an elegant solution. FWIW, I bought a 2010 Outback. I never owned an...

It's time for a family tent...

I went through a similar search last fall for a tent. You'll be hard pressed to find a lightweight tent that you can actually stand up in. Narrowing it down to full fly and good head clearance limited the selection tremendously, and the weight to >15 pounds. I think that most tents with an...

Lost my windshirt - can anyone suggest a replacement?

+1 for the Driclime. I use it for everything. But also would recommend the Patagonia Traverse jacket. Not really a "windshirt," but a very light weight softshell, with a tight weave and durable for bushwhacking, repels light rain really well. Very good for this time of year. The description...

Alex Honnald - free soloing video

Honnold is amazing. This was part of the First Ascent series that was also aired on TV either on National Geographic Channel or Discovery or something along those lines last Fall. They also followed Honnold free soloing the Nose. Crazy. There was one portion where he was on a ledge (it was...

    Ice Farming???

Chugach, I know the owner of Rock and River in the Adirondacks does this for his "ice park." You can probably talk to him to see how he does it, but the contraption that I saw was at the end of his hose, he had tubing/PVC pipes that was connected with several, evenly spaced shower heads. This...

    Hiking Crampons

+1 for sabretooths being great on ice and even easy mixed. I've used sabretooths and g12s for many technical climbs, and many seasoned ice climbers use sabretooths or grivel g12s for ice climbs. In fact, I believe Steve House climbed Nanga Parbat with g12s and not vertical point crampons ---...

    Climbing Rainier in May-June

I climbed with RMI this past year and thought they were absolutely fantastic. They have excellent guides, including Dave Hahn who's summitted Everest more than anyone else (besides sherpas), Brent Okita who's summitted Rainier over 400 times, Ed Viesturs who needs no intro, and others. I...

climbing crampons; G14's, another G12 or somehing else ?

Check out coldthistle.blogspot.com Dane has several posts about crampons that's worth reading, and it seems that he has the resources to test out multiple models as well as boots, and he gives pretty in-depth reviews/critiques.

climbing crampons; G14's, another G12 or somehing else ?

There are a couple of good reviews and comparisons about climbing vertical ice with vertical points or horizontal points and I'll try to find them later, but in short, you can check out these forums that have discussed crampons extensively. neice.com cascadeclimbers.com mountainproject.com...

    Avalanche Lake

I don't know about Avalanche Lake, but people were walking across Chapel Pond this morning. But, I think the weather is suppose to be kind of warm for the next couple of days, so it could all change.

    RICE No More

I did a search, and I think this is the article. I haven't read it yet, but figured I would post it first. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20889618 Edit: If anyone is interested in the full text article and do not have access to it, just PM me with your email address and I can send it to you.

    Self Arrest theory ve practice

That's kind of interesting. So you were taught to carry the axe in the self-belay position? I think if you are not truly using the axe in self-belay/piolet, ie plunging the axe into steep snow to climb, then it would be better to keep the axe in the self-arrest position. I think the danger is...

    Ideal Midlayers

It also depends for me. My system is generally the same as yours. But generally, I wear a light baselayer. Many times I'll just wear that plus my softshell in temps down to the 20s when it is windy or with precip. But, colder than that and depending on how cold it is and how fast I want to...

    Rest Step Technique

One other note: the rest step is a technique and not a pace. You can go as fast as you want or as slow as you want, and as long as that back leg is straight and the weight is supported by the bones, you get a benefit of a rest. Aviarome

    Food handling in Panther Gorge

Whoops, I misunderstood. Technically Panther Gorge is still a part of the Eastern High Peaks so a bear can is required. But, I never had a problem at Panther Gorge even before bear cans were required.

    Food handling in Panther Gorge

Well, you definitely can't use it as a pillow, as you're suppose to place the canister a number of feet away. Bears can still smell the contents in the bear canisters and will be curious about it. They just won't be able to get into it - or at least they're not suppose to be able to get into it.

    EMS Club Day 10/2-10/3

The Club Day sale is even better than that, 25% off EMS Brand items, 20% off everything else (except for a couple of brand exceptions), 30% of Black Diamond headlamps/lights. But Club Day ends today, and in store only, and you're suppose to show proof of membership. But usually there is an...

    Hardshell Jacket Suggestions

There is a difference between weight and breathability. A good softshell will breathe much better than a great hardshell. If you generate alot of body heat and sweat, you will generally "wet out" a hardshell sooner than a softshell. Aviarome
