    while hiking

Back in the day when crack was king in NYC and you were fool enough to both own a car AND try to park it on the street there were a number of sights peculiar to New York. One was the small piles of smashed auto glass next to every car in Greenwich Village at 3AM. Another were the different...

    Confirmed Gray Wolf in Adirondacks

Barry Sr wrote: 'Where do you get your documentation regarding Large numbers of weekend warriors? After taking the time that is needed in most states these days to be able to own and use hunting gear, you usually don't go firing off just to hear the noise. Most hunters are not what you...

    What would you do???

In the winter, and, if I had the gear (tent, winter bag, enough food), I'd play it safe and make camp before hypothermia clouded my thinking and the severe cold rendered my hands useless. But of course, that's what I say now on a beautiful spring day in the comfort of my own home. Billy

    Confirmed Gray Wolf in Adirondacks

Shadowcat has held her own very well but I'd just like to add a word of support to the points she and mommabear have raised. Personally I have no issue with hunting as long as the species isn't endangered and the kill is made use of for food or leather. As Shadowcat pointed out about the...

Gear & Preperation for Young Family In Whites

The Lonesome Lake Hut is open year round. It would be a great overnight trip or just a destination for a day hike. The trail in is about 2 miles with 1000' elevation gain from the Lafayette campground. Should be great on snow shoes. There are nice views of Mt Lafayette from the hut. If you...

    Any pics of Whitface Autoroad?

Thanks for the potato tip. I'm sure it works underwater. I wonder how it will work in serious cold. Hope I don't end up with a face full of frozen french fries. I wonder if it's the oil? Maybe a quick spray of PAM will do. Someone posted that you need double glazed goggles. I had...

    Whieface Auto Road Jan 29

Last photo Saw this eerie image appear when a cloud blew by. It looked like the ski area was closed. Nothing was moving down there. I'm not a peak bagger (I only have 1 of the 46), but I'm bummed I didn't make this one. It was soooo close.... but actually, I'm more bummed that my trail...

    Whieface Auto Road Jan 29

Whiteface Auto Road Jan 29 Hi All, As promised, details of my attempt. I picked Thursday because there was fresh snow on Tuesday/Wednesday and weather reports predicted a brief break in the weather. That part never happened. Winds were howling in the AM with temps around +5. The winds...

    Any pics of Whitface Autoroad?

:( but I guess I can wear these  Actually the frozen goggles prevented me from summitting. The wind blown snow above the 2nd hairpin killed my eyes. It was like being sand blasted. There was no room in my pockets anyway between the camera, some juice boxes and handwarmers (to keep...

    Any pics of Whitface Autoroad?

Hi All, I just got back. I'll post a trip report and some photos on the trip report page. I think I missed my weather window by a day. Yesterday (Thursday) was brutal (at least by my standards). My respect level for winter 46'rs has climbed immeasurably! One question. Anyone know a link to...

    Any pics of Whitface Autoroad?

Unless the storm here limits travel I'll head up tomorrow night and do the road on Thursday. If anyone wants to join in drop me an email. Thanks again for all the replies and pictures. The lobster corn chowder sounds awesome but I might have to pass on that this time around.

    Any pics of Whitface Autoroad?

These pictures are almost painful, I have to get out of here. This weekend. I'll post a trip report. Thanks again to everyone... And when I said 'these pictures are almost painful' it might have been a bit Freudian after looking at 'leduc's' personal photo. My French is non-existent, but I...

    Any pics of Whitface Autoroad?

Hi All, Being a downstater I haven't done much in the ADK's in winter. I'm considering losing my virginity by skiing the Whiteface Auto Road or possibly Wright or Marcy. I'd love to see some photos if anyone has any. Work is slow for another couple of weeks and they're taking about snow on...

    Hiking Solo?

In the Grand Tetons there's a nice trail to a place called Ampitheater Lake. To continue past the lake you're into technical climbing to summit Grand Teton. I was soloing this trail, but it's a very popular hike. About 2 miles in I get a whiff of what you mentioned. In my head I'm going...

    Hiking Solo?

You're right. If I start singing it would really scare the hell out of them (and any humans that happened to be within ear shot). Thanks for making me feel like I'm not a total wimp.

    Hiking Solo?

I'm nowhere near the league of most of the posters here and find solo hiking pretty daunting. My one rule is being willing to turn back. Last fall I solo'd Wheeler in New Mexico. I started late and only gave myself 4 hours for the 8 miles up. It was slower than I thought due to the altitude...

    ski waxing question

Hi, What kind of skis are you folks using on the toll road? Heavier tele skis?, lighter (edged) cross country skis?, skinny little things with no edges? All of the above? Thanks, Billy
