    Site for Snow Totals?

Thanks Excellent sites. Informative and fun, too. Chili Willie and I ended up skiing at Lapland Lake, which was beautiful. He also stopped on the way at Alpenhaus to check out the back country skis. Great day.

    Site for Snow Totals?

I am looking for a site which gives a map of snow totals, especially recent totals. I seem to remember such a site and having it bookmarked a few years ago, but when I changed computers and browsers, it seems to have disappeared. I believe I first saw it mentioned on VFTT, and tried to locate...

Or, as someone else put it another way.. "Everything I have, hurts, and if it don't hurt, it don't work!"

    Skiing to Allen

Got skins? The first 5+ miles in should be skiable by a novice, if the novice can handle small open hills, both up and down. The next 2 miles or so goes up and down a ridge to Skylight Brook. To my eye - I am an intermediate skier - depending on the snow conditions you could probably climb ok...

    Pine Marten?

Times Square Pine Marten In June, 2004, Chili Willie and I saw one at about 8 pm in Times Square in the Santanoni Range in the ADK's. I think I read somewhere that this particular Pine Marten has been known to be hanging out there for years. Willie got some nice pictures, but I am not...

Coyote Encounter on Day Hike ??

Coyotes in the ADK's About a month ago, Chili Willie and I saw a coyote, dead, on the side of the Northway, Rt 87, just north of mile marker 74, northbound. I also remember a story in one of the local Albany papers a year or so ago about a local hunter who was attacked by coyotes and bitten...

    Hike & Camp Jul 1-4 : Catskills?

Looks Good I looked this campground up and it looks very good. I printed out driving directions for both Jon and his friend (Scoutmaster Tom's son), and gave the directions to both of them during Jon's brief week at home. He said he needed to find out from his boss what his schedule would be...

    Hike & Camp Jul 1-4 : Catskills?

Thanks for the information Last December on my birthday Chili Willie and I hiked along Kaaterskill Falls and then up to an escarpment I think we went thru the North Lake Campground you mention, and it was pretty nice. I will go back and check my notes. The Woodland Valley CG sounds nice...

    Hike & Camp Jul 1-4 : Catskills?

Jon is finally back from his year in China - but off to Scranton, PA to work for the summer. He would like to get together with some friends from Albany, NY and Hartford, Conn during this weekend, and would like to camp out and do some hiking. He is a 46er, and his friends have climbed about a...

    Chaffing, it hurts.

A&D Ointment works really well for me. I use it before hiking or before biking. I put it on after showering and drying off. It's cheaper than bacitracin or neosporin, but those work well, too. I carry one or the other of them in my first aid kit (bacitracin or neosporin, not the A&D)...

Skiing Middle Saranac Lake Feb 5

Chili Willie and I were thinking of skiing on Middle Saranac Lake and possibly through to Upper Saranac Lake next weekend (2/5/05). Other than inlets and outlets, does anyone know of possible weak ice areas on these two lakes? Anything else of interest? PS - Since I went thru the ice last...

    VFTT hike - Noonmark 1/29/05

In the hills above Hong Kong but thinking of the Adirondacks. I loved Noonmark and would love to go back again. Maybe I'll join you - think snow shoes would do? The knee has been holding up very well in the hills around Hong Kong and Hong Kong University No wonder Jon likes it here...

Santanoni Range - Is This The Wrong Time Of The Year?

Trail to the Santanoni's Good memory, rhihn. There is a sudden drop in the trail, about 60 feet or so, during which there are two downed trees to go around or over, (one of each as I recall) and then the trail comes to a low area, which starts the muddiest part. It's another 10-15 minutes or...

    Marshall or Allen?

Marshall, via Herbert Brook I love that trip through the forest and then in and out of Herbert Brook. Look back around you as you climb - the opening views are wonderful. If you have the time, stay at one of the LT's and make it an overnight, taking the time to really enjoy the mountain...

    Seward Range

Last Water Crossing on Calkins Brook Trail From Stoopid, (who post here and on ADKFOrum) who hiked last weekend with a GPS, concerning the altitude and location of the last water crossing on the CBT: It was 3156'. Just after it was the area of blow down, so if you see an opened area minutes...

    Seward Range

Finding the Calkins Brook Herd Path From Alpine Summit (a frequent poster here and on ADKForum also): From the trailhead: - after the horse & people trails split it's about 2 miles to a truck trail (this is the one) take it by turning right - you're gonna walk that for about 30 -40...

    Seward Range

Tenting Suggestions for Calkins Brook For those of us who plan to use Calkins Brook to approach the Sewards and who might want and/or need to spend a night or two doing it - from Rondak100: "I would mention three possibilities for camping near Calkins Brook to get close to the range: Camping...

    Seward Range

Tenting Up Calkins Brook I have been talking with Alpine Summit and he told me there are several places along this ascent where he believes you could do some minimalist camping, legally, and be well positioned for a run at the Sewards. He thinks the last spot is about half way up, before you...
