When I saw that Doublebow was returning to the Catskills and looking for people to hike with I jumped on the opportunity to return to the area after my 5 month hiatus from hiking. With only 3 hikes, all in Harriman, since returning to the woods I proposed Peekamoose and Table since I had done that hike several times and remembered it as being one of the easier hikes in the Catskills but still providing great views from the rock ledges near the summits.

We met at their motel in Phonecia and after the short drive, with a stop at Buttermilk Falls for some quick pictures, we arrived at the Peekamoose trail head and were on the way just after 9 a.m.

It was a beautiful day and we made good and steady progress, occasionally glancing back over our shoulders for some of the views as we began gaining some elevation.

After a quick snack at the rock ledges on Peekamoose we headed for the actual summit (a boulder with no view) and kept on moving towards Table.

We quickly reached the summit of Table (remnants of the canister still visible on the pine it was mounted to) and continued on to the viewpoint overlooking the trail and Peekamoose just visible. The winds were approaching hurricane force so we only paused for some quick photos and headed back to the summit of Table where Doublebow had planned to bushwhack Lone Mountain from.

I had given Doublebow a set of Trail Conference Catskills maps and knowing he was experienced we discussed his plans for the hike and for where Shamie was going to meet him.

DB set off on his quest for another 3500' peak and our group headed back for the cars.

We got back to the vehicles around 3:30 p.m. or so and drove out to Rte. 28 together and there parted company with Shamie headed west to meet DB and me and my friend Rich headed back to Long Island.

All was well until around 8 o'clock the next morning when Shamie called me at home saying DB never met her at the trailhead. The rangers were notified but were preoccupied by a search for a missing 4 year-old.

Fortunately after many frantic phone calls, forum postings and plans to return to the area, Shamie called around 9 saying that DB was back at the motel safe and sound.

I'll let Doublebow post the accound of his adventure when he gets back to New Hampshire. I look forward to reading it as much as anyone.
